2 moI think a lot of people over exaggerate how bad things are nowadays. They use the excuse of "the economy and state of society is so bad now, I would never have kids." I genuinely dislike those people because it's a nonsensical excuse.
Well, when in history did we have it better? When people were chopping heads off left and right? When women didn't have a say in decisions on most regions of the world? When healthcare was worse and people died from simple infections?
In 1820 and before, more than 99% of people lived in poverty. For the vast majority of human history, living at what we would today consider a "livable" standard was almost unattainable. Nearly everyone lived in conditions that would be considered severe poverty today.
In 1990 that number went down to approximately 86%. In 2015, it went down to 80%. The latest stats are about 74% in 2024.
So which part of the past was easier to live in? None. People romanticize the past and say it was better to live back then, but the harsh reality is, these times are the easiest it's ever been to live. We have so many conveniences... groceries with every product you can think of, drug marts and hospitals with advanced technology, food delivery, phones to communicate with anyone around the world in an instant, a much higher standard of house and building infrastructure, enhanced security due to all the security cameras everywhere, an app for pretty much everything, etc.
All of this has created a world of entitled, pampered people who have no idea what real hardship is.
That being said, there are still negatives of living today. We have much less space. Just 500 years ago, the estimated human population was about 500 million in comparison to the 8 billion we have today. That's a 1600% increase in the population in just 500 years. Imagine the space they had back then.
Then there's security. Due to everyone always carrying a camera around on their phones and security cameras posted everywhere, there's no privacy anymore. You can't even take public anymore transit without someone pulling out their phone to record you. Just assume you're always being watched. And now, they're saying that with the use of AI, they've found a way to monitor humans bodies with any wireless devices, including your modem. And they can see it all through walls. Think you're safe at home? Think again.
So there are definitely tradeoffs. I would kill to have the freedom they had in the past. Now everything is policed.
Dating has also went downhill. In 1970, over 80% of men were married by age 30. Today, it's only 23%. Due to all the conveniences and modern technology, women don't see the value of a man anywhere nearly as much in the past. Everyone's trying to live on their own for their own peace because everyone has such low tolerance levels of each other.
In 1970, a lot of the time, one income could buy a house. Nowadays, it takes 2 and sometimes still isn't enough.
So has the economy taken a bit of a hit? Sure. But we have so many conveniences that make today much easier to live than in the past.
Do I still wish we had a reset? Yes. Remove social media. Remove dating apps. Remove the Internet in general. I wish we went back to simple lives.
And with AI now, things will progress technologically at a much faster rate than before. We've made some crazy things happen. We've successfully reversed age and have moved on to testing on humans. If you live up to another 10 years more, you can expect that you'll be able to take a pill for a few weeks and literally become younger. We may become immortal in the sense we can choose when we want to die. We've made a synthetic carbon based material that has the strength of steel but is 64 times lighter than it. It's going to change the world and how we travel, especially in the air. We've cured cancer in many forms, although the treatment isn't mainstream yet and is still in testing. We're close to having nuclear fusion (replicating the Sun) as an unlimited supply of clean energy, which will reshape everything in the world. The applications would be endless. The current record for a nuclear fusion reactor is 22 minutes by France. And there's so much more. I just shared some of the stuff I'm excited about.20 Reply

We look at the current state and think we’re living in an exceptional era of violence and poverty and so on
But if you pick a random date on a calendar you will land on a year with violence and poverty and everything else
The names and places change every few hundred years but human nature is very consistent and predictable20 Reply

2K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. I was born and raised in America 🇺🇸
It has become unrecognizable to me. It has changed that much.
Almost all of the stores that we have been used shopping at are all closed down, which has forced me to ship online for everything!
I was buying my groceries from Amazon for the past year. When I went to places my order, in red letters it said "We don't deliver to your zip code. Change your address." Am I supposed to move to another zip code to get my groceries from Amazon?
In my State, it's 43% Hispanic. Then there are people of color and Asian people. I rarely see a white person anymore. I miss seeing and interacting with white people, my people, but they just aren't many around anymore.
Things change at a rapid speed that I can't keep up with what's going on in America 🇺🇸 anymore. It's like watching a football game on TV. That's how fast everything is changing in America, so I just skip over reading about all of these changes and figuring that when it's something that will concern me, I'll get a notice in mail and then I will react to it.
The problem now, is that I probably won't be getting any notifications in my mailbox 📬 because now they are considering closing down the post offices in 2027. Will my hundreds of FOREVER stamps only be good until next year? What's forever for?
America 🇺🇸 has changed so much and way too fast, and it's headed in the wrong direction.
AI is supposed to be the wave of our future. That's really so funny that I actually laugh out loud. GaG has recently implemented AI BOTS on this website. I would be hard pressed to find members who like this change because I have been reading their complaints about it. It's a big thumbs down!!👎🏼
Will someone please take me back to the 70's where will experience America as being great again (MAGA)?20 Reply
2 moIf we're considering the grand scheme of life now as opposed to life back in the day it seems pretty clear that we are in a much better place and that we're trending towards a greater future. Even a century ago most countries did not have a functioning sewage system like we have today. It is unfortunate that mainstream news constantly paints the doom and gloom of the world but that's the kind of news that draws the attention of the masses.
Severe partisanship has also caused huge amounts of despondency between people, disagreements between political matters are treated as if there are world ending consequences should the opposing stance be implemented. Let's be real, the world isn't going to end if transgender women are disallowed to use the women's bathroom, the world isn't going to end if there are tighter gun controls (guns are banned everywhere else and we're fine), the world isn't going to end if there are stricter regulations surrounding abortion. The world isn't going to end if correct pronouns are used.

2 moThat's a good question. If I only look at my country, Poland, it's clear that we basically do not have a society anymore. It's really bad and getting worse. However, there is a glimpse of hope if I look at the bigger picture. The East has always been a beacon of hope, but now even the USA seems to be recovering from a state even worse than what we have here in Poland. Granted, there are basically two societies within the USA at this point... But the way I see it, only one of these is demographically viable and it's the conservative one. If the same happens on Poland (and if You look up Shoe0nHead and Her reports on the state of the USA, Poland seems to be following the US lead, just with a few years worth of lag), we are going to recover, and so might the entire West. The explosion of VTuber communities might aid these efforts, as well, given how tight-knit these communities are, while also retaining the ability to work with each other. In a way, I believe the VTubing community to actually create a brand-new civilization on the ruins of the current one, with tight-knit tribes seeking both cooperation and war with the other tribes. Once this model stabilizes, it might smoothly replace this rotten civilization of today.
10 Reply 5.6K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. When Reagan became President in 1981, he had the solar panels on top of the White House removed. Soon, other basic aspects of American society were changing. It was something of a party atmosphere by 1984, but, I could see that the foundations of what was keeping America strong were beginning to die. Even the current Affordability Crisis (not to mention the Energy Crisis which began in 1973 and never really went away) began during his first administration and I could see it then.
So, I never felt right about having children and eventually came made the decision not to have them because I knew things would never be good enough in my lifetime that I'd feel I could make them safe and not suffer worse than I did. The only way to protect them was to not have them.
I have never regretted this decision. I can sleep at night knowing my kids are safe by unexisting. But I empathize a bit with all the people who did not, could not, or refused to see what was coming and had kids anyway. But, mostly, I feel bad for the kids such as yourself. This shit was all foreseeable if you kept your eyes and ears open and used your intellect to question what was happening.
For the most part, we got the world we deserve.

On the bright side, I don't think the world is coming to an end... or, specifically, I don't think humans will become extinct, but I think we as a species have crossed a Rubicon of sorts and that the quality of life is deteriorating and will continue to do so without revolution of our sociopolitical systems AND in our own discipline.
10 ReplyWe will bomb ourselves from this planet. We ki ourselves and the planet get back its freedom and peace. But maybe we destroy everything while beating ourselves to death.
If everyone is only going for money & power then the future is darker than death metal.
I know people won't change and I can't xhange anyone. I only hope one day the right people will be punished when they are alive. Health you can't buy or living forever. Not yet. So I hope one day all mean people will see what they have done and regret it.21 Reply- 2 mo
I liked the darker than death metal line 😂👍🏼
To counteract death metal, I recommend power metal !
2 moI dont like the world we live in, I think it is all wromg. We are very lucky but we take it for granted. People work for money instead of to do what they love. The purpose of everything we do is selfish. A tree doesn't grow just one apple. Its grow as many as it can ans shares with anyone or anything that gets the apple. It doesn't make apples for money or to better itself. It makes apples because thats the trees purpose. I think we should do things because its our purpose.
Food made by someone who wants to make it, always taste better then food made by someone who doesn't... I can't understand why we do keep doing this for money, instead of purpose.10 Reply- 1.7K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic.
2 moThe world is in a very exciting place right now. It's got a lot going for it. People are starting to see things more clearly, technology is about to shake things up. There are going to be so many young people who can create things that make them enough money to support their families.
If we're smart, we might even be able to break free from the corperate slavery economy the world is being taken over by. I think a sort of renaissance is on the way.

2 moI want to be optimistic, but at the same time I know my opinion holds little sway in how the world will turn. There’s nothing I can really do when it comes to the decisions other people in power make aside from supporting them or choosing not to. Thinking about a future where I can support nothing just makes me feel depressed so I don’t enjoy thinking about the future very much since it seems that’s where things are currently going.

- Economic crisis
- Climate crisis
- Immigration crisis
- Science and media crisis
- Rise of the far-right
- Rise of the far-left
- Western social media in the hands of a single country governed by a reality show prez
However, grass is still green, I still have things I enjoy doing, it's spring, I have good friends, art, music, coffee. Also I'm in love and I want her.
10 Reply 26.4K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. It;s a real mess. I hope that President Trump can get most of America's Agenda passed and gets the country on the right track again. I have to believe that he took how important and precarious the mid term elections will be before he invaded Iran.
10 Reply2.6K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. Just as in WW2, authoritarian regimes are seeking to dominate democratic regimes.
Maybe the authoritarian regimes win this time which I won't like. Certainly none of us will like the cost.
10 ReplyNot gonna lie situation is getting grimmer but it's not as bleak as it is being shown to us by the media and social media.
The news that sells the posts that get the most views are all from news that are dark and sensationalised.
It doesn't mean that we are doing ok but what we see and hear is much more than in real.
And I know a lot of people won't agree with it but I am just trying to be optimistic about humanity.10 Reply- 1.1K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic.
