Why does every foreigner think they HAVE to tip in the U. S?

I swear, the biggest complaint I hear from foreign tourists is that they HAVE to tip! You don't HAVE to do anything! There are no laws and no one is extorting tips from you like in other countries. If you don't want to tip, don't tip. Simple as that.

In EXTREME cases you might get scolded, but the worst that'll happened is they'll think you're an asshole and will badmouth you to their coworkers. So what? You'll never see them again!

I rarely tip, even at the places I frequent regularly. Only person I tip is my barber.

USA is a very giving country. We've been the wealth generator and power for a long time. In our culture, we tip for the service as part of the pay packge of the worker. Oddly, don't think that goes to the chef, whom makes or breaks the day. Odd... but still... and post covid, we tip even higher percentage.

USA was tipping the world for a long time, sending food and everything else globally. We were tipping Europe paying for their military. We developed technologies and gave them away stimulating world growth. Some of it was stolen and used against us as outsourcing took place, but over time, we made profit by the cheaper products.

So feel free to tip us back, give us lots of tips for being wonderful, amazing. For taking hitler out and rebuilding Europe, enabling it to be free, to have 5 weeks of vacation and social benefits that most americans never see outside of some state and federal. Many americans eat lower quality food than europeans, it's what they can afford and brain washed to eat. Tip them.

So do send us tips if we are working because it's expected. In some cases, it's all the person makes and you wouldn't believe what they ahve to pay to survive...

They don't understand it. They know Americans tip, so they do it not to offend anyone. But they really don't know what things to tip for, and how much. And yes, they probably don't realize it's optional - even though it's totally expected.

It doesn't help that they sometimes ask about it on places like GaG and there is always someone saying they should tip much more than they really should.

Tips at restaurants used to only be 10%. Then it went up to 15%. Then 20%. Now, there are a lot of people tipping 30%, which I hope never becomes expected.

People also tip for things now that never used to be tipping jobs. People still tip for things when the cost is already very high. Like I know a women who charges $50 for a basic haircut. That's outrageous, but she still expects a 20% tip. That's crazy.

Your partly right however in the restaurant business on tables of 6 or more we are allowed to automatically add the tip to bill which they do have to pay. Outside of that what you said it true. The difference is most of Europe, Canada you pay more for your food and drinks as the tip has been added to the cost which many think we also do. I wish we did as my girls would make out much better if I could add currently 20% to my food prices to cover girls tips. The foreigners pay it, just in a different way.

That's a "service charge" though which is slightly different and it's disclosed by the restaurant

On France they tell us it’s mandatory to do it but i always thought that I would not do it if i went to America as nobody can force me I mean tips is when the service is good so you want on your own accord to give a « tap in the back » to say the service was good there's no laws forcing you to do it

Our first night in Guadeloupe we tipped and the lady gave us such a weird look, we didn't keep again.

Well it depend where you go (in France at least the Island I don’t know) as my mom did tip some people in France mainly hair dresser and in coffee shop and people were not surprised but I think it depend on the person

Nah, in the US they won't force you. But in some private businesses if you accidently give too much, they'll just keep it. It happened to my mom twice. The Chinese restaurant she went back and got it back, but the barder she didn't say anything because she's a regular.
I'm always shocked people use their card in third world countries then are shocked they got robbed. In the US, at least we have laws against these things.

I heard in Paris they'll take it. Some guy told Rick Steves to tip there and others say No, because they already include it.

Yes it depend on the shop and that’s because they re used to foreigner in France it’s included in the prices but they won’t complain if you tips after in genrlz when people tips in F race it’s like 1 or 2 euros not 10 pour-cent or more as they ask in the us

Its a moral thing... I dont believe tipping should be what people rely on for income it should be an added bonus for good service. But that's not how it works there so I would definitely tip minimum because I dont want to be the reason someone can't pay their bills.

Why would you be the reason someone can't pay their bills. There are other factors involved.
Only thing I know of is there was a woman at our campground who was relying on tip money to pay for her family's campsite. She didn't tell us that initially and the rangers kicked her out for non-payment, 'cuz she was behind like 2 or 3 days.

Cause a lot of them don't completely understand it themselves since they don't tip back home. I tip based on the quality of the service I get. I also don't/ won't tip just to watch someone to pour my coffee in a cup. I rather stop supporting that business then feel like tipping is a must.

As a tourist I did feel I had to tip as it seemed part of the local culture. The EFTPOS asked for 10% so I felt obliged.

My personal thing is unless they are bringing the food to you, I don't tip. It's expensive enough as is.

It depends on the circumstances. If you're going through a drive through picking up a coffee, no need to tip. If you're at a restaurant and your waiter / waitress does a good job, you better fucking tip or you're just a douchebag.

I don't know about drive throughs, but QR code order places are asking for tips and takeout places before you even get the food

You are ignorant of the facts. Tips are part of a waiter's "salary". Their income is based on 20%, but tipping gives YOU, the consumer control over whether they actually earn it. If they do a poor job, you give them less, and if they do a stellar job you give them more. But if tipping were removed from the equation, that 20% would just be built into the price on the menu, so you would have to pay it anyway, you would just have zero control over it.

With tipping, you have control, not the waiter. Remove tipping and you lose control, and the motivation for the waiter to earn it. It's not rocket science, but some people are just too ignorant to understand the simple facts.
