so basically you're critiquing the welfare state. certain goods and services are public thus the public gotta pay for it. being a german with a public retirement fund, i see one big issue what if you make up a sistem that is based on "paying it foreward" but then birth rates go down and nobody pays it foreward?

and in the context of the American population development, it think that's actually a very good compensatory mechanism. cause the boomer generation had a big perspective in life. if they took a loan to pay for education, they could pay that loan off, build a house and have a family. the current generation don't have that perspective. like if you're lucky, you get to actually pay off the loan and have a family. but owning a house is not financially possible for a large chunk of the population. so i think you could argue that the boomer generation created the population we now have that causes a massive chunk of the financial issues we now have. so i think it's fair when they help the younger generation achieve their goals through financing their education with tax.
