Is a business lying about a broken card machine an illegal bait and switch?

Our b&b owner wants to force us to pay cash so he is pretending his credit card machine is broken.

Our church used to visit Vietnamese Pho noodle restaurants that told us they accepted credit card and after we were done eating they would lie and tell us their credit card machine was broken, because if they do not accept credit card they can avoid reporting their full income to the government and get away with paying lower taxes.

Absolutely. It's the oldest trick in the book. Card machines rarely break for the simple reason doing so would be devastating for businesses and so banks invest a lot into their reliability.

I know some of the handheld ones used on market stalls can be a bit slow and occasionally go down, but when there's serious cash involved, companies want reliability.

Isn't it funny how every shop in the area has a working card machine yet so so many restaurants have a notice on the door claiming theirs is broken

If you dont want to pay them go somewhere else, cash is king - like credit card fees are a joke my business pays 3.2% on each transaction it comes to hundreds in 4 months
