Phone verification has always been a thing, same with linking an account to a street address which is meant to collect your data for mega corporations to share for a profit.
The new wave of verification is Government ID verification, where you give up your Govt issued ID to allow corporations to collect your data and risk it all on unprotected server farms which can be easily hacked by Chinese or Russians or so on and get away with it because it is your information, not the information of the rich

Online privacy has always been dying, but corporations (GAG does this too) by making your site 18+ only it takes the responsibility of the company and puts the blame on you (the user). Because now minors will lie about their age with parents’ permission granted by giving up their Identification or minors will create a new account pretending to be 18+ which if the minor gets harmed, it is on the users not the company for putting such a bad system in place. They don’t want liabilities and want all the profit.

PS GAG only does the 18+ thing, not the Identification. Want to make that clear.
Corporations and companies do indeed want to lower liabilities and maximize profit, which comes at the expense of the users.

In the UK we have the looming digital ID; facial recognition cameras rolling out across towns and cities; myriad congestion schemes in city centres so driving in many locations becomes more difficult and costly; no doubt digital currency is coming very soon so all purchases will be trackable; and of course, in the name of child safety, I'm sure it won't be too long before you will need your digital ID to sign into the internet. In fact, I'm sure I saw an article that the EU was planning some such scheme, and VPN's wouldn't be able to get around it.

All for 'our own safety', while we have open borders...

So we can see the direction of travel. The 'net' is closing in.

One thing we have to be aware of is that privacy is a bit of a fiction, particularly in these times.

'Conspiracy theories' are really just things that are going to happen in 5 years time, these days.

No I think we lost our online privacy a long time ago, and using the phone verification or email verification helps a lot from keeping your financial accounts safe from fraud.

Online privacy? No such thing nowadays. Even if you're using a tor browser or something, those can still be tracked. Privacy died many a years ago.

Your data is logged and catalogued everywhere you go online and if a company wants your information, it's very easy for them to find.

Hell, the right person with the right skill set can even do it themselves. Someone on here I'm sure has to know how to identify your name, number, and physical location from this post alone.

I don't think people really realize how susceptible they are to privacy invasion while online nowadays. You'd have to be very careful and take strenuous steps in order to remain anonymous online. And to be honest, it's just not worth it for most people.

Absolutely yes, but there will be bastions that are resistant to the laws like Matrix (If you use something like matrix. unredacted. org) and Nostr. Not the easiest tech to use, but its absolutely going to resist these phone/id verification shenanigans.

    No. don't be silly.

You can easy get a burner sim for a few bucks if you're concerned about "phone verification".

Online privacy is largely a myth though. If they want to find you - they will. You just need to make it too costly for them, is all.

Thing is phone or email verification number or address has to match your online account information. It is designed to prevent access to your account

No. The battle simply escalates. There are services. For a price. Phone and Email masking. Data and query trail erasing. VPN encryption. AI screening and retaliation against scammers.

Yes, Large Corporations want to profit from your data. and Corrupt Governments want to monitor and control you, It should be the other way around, Transparency for governments instead of secrecy and privacy for all citizens.

Online privacy died when every institution on the planet has already been hacked, multiple times even... from the Pentagon, to Facebook, to your local bank and hospital, 15-20 years ago.

I am not important enough to be concerned about what others know about me.
    My privacy happens offline anyway.

There's a simple workaround for that. Just don't use sites that require phone verification.

I never have a problem when legitimate websites etc want my to legitimately verify my legitimate ID.

Nowadays and eventually soon it'll just become second nature.

Nothing on the net is private. Your ip can be tracked etc. Your isp stores and sells all of your data as well.

Probably, because most people on the internet are morons. There’s a very simple way you can keep your privacy if you have the brain cells to work it out.

I presume so. They have to stop those who don't respect other people's privacy, obviously.
