I don't think it was meant to be seen as shade. I think they have a culture that values the idea of wisdom in its abstract form which is to say something long lasting which has survived the harshness of time. There's also the symbolism about two trees growing into one much like a partnership between two countries.

He was going through a lot of trouble to frame the location as sacred and to communicate for someone who isn't Chinese to be there means something.
