What's one thing you would change about schools (high school and lower)?

One thing I would change is the zero tolerance policy. It's too restrictive and punishes those being bullied from defending themselves.

Another is minor tweaks to the dress code. It slants more towards restricting girls because it could be a "distraction" for boys and teachers. First off, if it's a distraction for teachers, then remove those teachers for sexualizing minors. As for boys, teach them to respect girls. I'm not saying let girls wear shorts with their ass hanging out, but there needs to be some rules amended. I know Title IX changes some of the wording on policies but it's still affecting girls more like on things about straps on their tops for example.

So how about for you? What would you change about schools that are high school and lower?

I agree about bullying. It was my personal rule when I was kid.
I’m nice to you up till the point you come at me, then it’s a merciless beat down. (And teachers secretly respected that)

Another thing I would change is how we approach learning and evaluation.
Early on you’re happy to be at school, you can count, you can do additions, multiplications, you learn to read and write, begin to dabble in science and so on…
Then it all becomes about the tests.
Suddenly it doesn’t matter what you learn or don’t learn. What you remember or forget.
All that matters is passing the next test.
And when the test is done you move on. You can forget all about it.

So kids become focused on passing the next test. Suddenly they hate everything, math is no fun, history is no fun, biology is no fun…
It’s all about passing the test.

So they get good at cheesing the exams and finding ways to temporarily memorize enough to get by. Then forget it all to make up space.

It creates incompetent adults and we have way too many of those.

My mom had hives recently and she went to a young dermatologist. He prescribed anti histamine AND anti fungal pills (thinking he will cover all the bases just in case)

Her two medicines had a reaction with one another that almost killed her.
Just because he was allowed to graduate without having learned anything at all.

She got lucky she went to a pharmacy and the old pharmacist immediately recognized the problem and told her to get off the anti fungal.
Now she’s nearly cured.

I don’t know what the right answer is but we certainly need to a way to better evaluate knowledge assimilation and better nurture the inquisitive mindset.

(Personally I enjoy learning things for my own pleasure today. It’s no longer about tests and I love history, geography, physics, political science and so on. Used to hate it all in school)

I would end their Anti Bullying Campaign and their Anti Drug Campaign all together. Instead of virtue signaling you are Anti Bullying, have resources to help students actually going through it and give them an avenue to recover and get confidence back after being a victim of classroom harrassment and cyberbullying. And put in the work into education of drugs and the health of the students’ bodies and minds over fear mongering with a school policeman playing teacher for the evening.

Oh and increase teachers salaries to meet inflation of the cost of living because teachers do a lot and put up with Karens, so they deserve good pay to be good rolemodels for the next generation.
This is grievances that can be universal for all schools (the bully thing) and elementary to middle school (the policeman playing teacher telling kids drugs are evil and the people who sell or do them are evil without nuance or explanation really).

Normal school was straight up retarded. Fortunately, I got to go to charter school later with the Hollywood movie star kids (2 hours/week), but I'll get to that later. North Hollywood High was basically a prison. You get your bags searched, walk through metal detectors, all your classmates have prison time or being a hooker in their future. And they basically didn't teach anything... it was a mandatory day-prison and it was fucking insane... everyone was a gangsta, naw what I'z sayin and sheeeeeit?

Before I went to school there, I was going to school all the way up in Northern California, right next to Oregon. Instead of math and English, it was all about "white people bad" and it was a shit show of what I'd call too much forced social interaction. I quickly was a failure in every class and was forced to be a bully just so I don't get bullied, if that makes any fucking sense to anyone at all. They weren't really teaching me shit.

Now back to when I left N. Hollywood High, went to Charter school in Burbank. 2 hours a fucking week, 1 hour two times a week. I learned way faster. They just give you work packets, you do those, and then take a test on it and pick up more packets. There really wasn't a downside to that school. You can work as slow or as fast as you want to. I'd knock out about 2 to 3 credits per week. I actually learned things. Any grade below a "C" meant you had to re-do everything. My grades shot up from "F's" to "A's and B's" pretty quick. Instead of spending 8 hours a day sitting in a hard chair while the retards asked a million question, I would just read and get my work done. There was no political shit being shoved down my throat. Sure I went to school with your movie and music stars, but I never talked to them... there was no need to be social at all. I actually liked my so called teachers... because they would literally just help you if you actually needed help. Regular classes from before... good luck getting help after the retards asked a million questions about the same shit over and over.

So what I'd change about schools... just teach them... no politics... no forced social shit... just let them learn, and learn at their own pace. Not everyone wants to be the most social fuck in the world that is hip about gay rights or whatever. Some of us just want to know how to do our own taxes and be able to write a book or two.

Teacher quality. Two things

- The average person entering teaching in Australia is the average of all the people that finish school. So roughly speaking, in high school, half the class is better at what they are teaching than they teacher. I exaggerate only a little. It's not sustainable.

- The quality of teaching research is woeful. I've been to an academic conference in the 'discipline' of teaching. People share stories. That's it. There is no research. One person will say 'What principals do is really important' and everyone things they are incredibly sage. What the heck use is that? You can't take a good principal and clone 10,000 of them. There is absolutely zero insight into what works and what does not.

Frankly, AI is the answer. Teachers should recognise that they are pretty dumb at subject matter, on average, and instead focus on managing classroom dynamics, supporting participation, facilitating group projects, encouraging and nurturing children's interests, low key social work, etc. AI can do the subject matter conveyance ten times as effectively.

A third comment is that we need to stop the 'curriculum as a Christmas tree that everyone hangs their favourite bauble on'. Schools should facilitate intellectual and interpersonal development. Fully 30% of class time could be freed up to do something useful.

@ez-bri-z_v2 I agree with you. If I could go back to HS, I would half kill several of the asshole bullies I encountered in HS. The zero tolerance' policy is bullshit, and we wonder why so many shootings in HS in recent memory,  and I have to ask myself if this is just a manifestation of some of the harassment and bullying that is allowed OR tolerated in Highschool? I had one stupid ass that was a 'thug' to many, and when I told my parents, mother went to school, and we had the SOB in the means counselor's office giving him some lessons in personal conduct - or else!  I live near Huntington Beach High School and when shopping locally, I DO see many of the girls coming off campus at lunch, with Just That... their ass hanging out, and that should be stopped.  These kids are not from destitute families, and many are well-to-do and parents must have their collective heads-up-their-asses, not to see it and do something about it Respect is EARNED, not something that is automatically given to just anybody regardless of the way they conduct themselves. My mom never liked that schools punished kids by not letting them eat lunch. She says, even rapists and murders get fed in prison.

And I can agree with you on the Zero Tolerance policy. American schools are so strict. My mom is from Europe, and always laughed. She said in Poland, if someone fought, the teacher would just split them up and put them in the corner until they cooled off.

American schools in general are VERY strict. Me and my friend got yelled at for kicking a BALL against the wall. And another time, a Mormon church called campus police on us, 'cuz me and my friends were kicking around a plastic bottle in their parking lot, and got WATER on their lot! WATER!

Personally, I'd be strongly in favor a Finnish style school system. Letting kids sit on desk and release their energy, even if it means beating each other up. Shorter school hours. No homework or testing. I don't think it would work in the U. S. though.

I would also put the mentally challenged kids into separate schools. At my schools there were many, many people, including myself didn't feel safe around them. One threw a rock at a teacher. A group of others would also throw rocks. Another would make shanks from pencils and wood and stab people. One punched a security guard in the stomach, and didn't even get in trouble, but if I did that or touched the retard kid, I'd get expelled and possibly even jailed.

Also, I'd allow free speech. If it's a government funded school, then it's technically required to abide by the constitution, so staff has no right to punish us for swearing or inappropriate artwork.

So basically, I'd change EVERYTHING! American schools are so fucked up! If I had a child, I personally wouldn't feel comfortable sending them to one.

The other thing I would do is all teachers if you're not a good teacher you're not going to be in that school

And real teachers that have knowledge about life about everything that don't keep on passing the fake lies and truth about who we truly are and what really happened in the past in history or science

One thing I would change about schools is their heavy focus on grades and memorizing information instead of genuine understanding and useful life skills. Students often spend years studying things they may never apply in real life, while essential skills like critical thinking, communication, financial education, and mental health awareness receive far less attention.

Schools should be preparing students for life beyond exams. Education would be far more valuable if students were encouraged to think for themselves, discover their strengths, and learn practical skills they can actually use in everyday life.

I agree with you about the bullies but about the dressing code for girls, i think that they are teaching girls how to value themselves and being modest, it's a rule which must work for every woman, whether she's a minor or adult!

Being a decent lady who respects her body and let others know that she ain't easy is a positive thing, plus it makes a guy focus on the core of a woman and not to focus only on her boobs and a$$

I would stop forcing the unwilling to take academic classes. I would make the dress code very basic -- if you could wear it to some job, it's ok to wear to school. No tolerance for disruptive behavior. If a student doesn't want to be in class, send them home.
