What are your thoughts on the recent Venezuela earthquakes and their impact?

It's unfortunate so many multi-storied buildings pancaked or toppled. This type of construction is only good through maybe 6.0 to 6.5 Magnitude quakes. Anything stronger than that, and you need to be on a shake table design like what Japan or the USA sometimes uses.

I just heard that the death toll is already up to 200 confirmed, with over 4000 confirmed injured.

With so many homes and businesses utterly destroyed or severely damaged, the Venezuelan economy is going to be wrecked for decades.

Unfortunately, real science suggests this is coming to the USA eventually on the San Andreas and Cascadia zones as well as just Mount Rainier. The Geologists have been warning for some time that something terrible is about to happen on the USA west coast, and the quake in California could easily be a "Pre-Shock" although pre-shocks are not as common as aftershocks.

I feel really bad for those that lost loved ones and those suffering from damage in an already poor country.

I am sure there will be more found and so many homeless and in need. I pray for the people effected by such a tragedy.

I just heard on the News as I was doing some chores in the house, that the death toll in Spain from the heatwaves now exceeds 500 as well. Those people need to install air conditioning and stay inside. There's no way to work outside in 105F temperatures. You'll get heat stroke or stress in 30 minutes.

I saw it on the morning news too. Also saw the report about the European heat wave. We are supposed to be upper 90s in the midwest next week. Hot and muggy.

920-something confirmed dead and rising. Thousands still missing, so expect the death toll to rise over the next several days and weeks.

I'm old enough to remember quakes with death tolls of 50,000 to over 200,000 unfortunately in Iran and in Sumatra. Still, this is terrible to see people lose their entire infrastructure and their loved ones in one day.

there are now 50,000 missing and unaccounted for. That doesn't mean they're all dead or injured, some of them could have just fled the scene since this happened, because the area is so unsafe now. We'll just have to wait and see what rescuers find now.

This might end up being the worst Earthquake in Western Hemisphere history.
