My dogs are lean. Their fur regulates their temperature. Humans have clothing instead.
Body fat in humans actually is a long term storage of excess energy.
Practically: if one is too fat, he/she/it/whatever will probably not be fast enough to get into warmer areas. Before hungry wolves, bears and such get them, that is :D
Yes. Innuit are more prone to putting on body fat to insulate but an overweight or obese person would not survive longer in extreme cold because of their pre existing health conditions.
If there's ever an extreme weather event, super natural disasters, global pandemic or famine the obese would all die first.

Body fat matters more than just in freezing temps.
When I was in the military, I wanted fit guys in a certain size and weight range on my team. There's a reason we all looked pretty similar. 5% body fat may look good in the gym. But you'll be a liability in the field. Likewise 30% body fat will make you a liability if you're trying to keep up with guys who have 15-18% body fat. Too much muscle is also a problem. It's useless bulk that demands more water, more food, and more rest.
For sustained high output in a wide range of circumstances that 15-18% body fat range seems to be the sweet spot for men. For women that range would be a little higher.
When my regiment was deployed with US national guard troops on joint operations one of the things I noticed about them was that they were all well muscled compared to us scrawny squadies but they were so slow in field, yet we were carrying more and heavier gear. I remember doing cross training with some us troops and they were showing us the gear and I put on their armour and a full combat load and shot a bit with an M4, so light. Maybe US troops were making more use of helicopter and vechiles for transport, seemed like it at the time.
Historically, extra weight left more room for people to survive long winters if their hunts and gatherings were lean or their harvests light.
Mind you, due to the tremendous amount of time and energy spent struggling to simply survive and store enough food for winter and famine, nobody stayed fat. Chronic obesity is a relatively new phenomenon and that’s why we are just now learning the full depth and breadth of the negative effects of being a perpetual fatty.
So contemporarily the fatty is less likely to survive any random period of time, and the season is irrelevant.
Fat is an insulator, so yes. With that being said, not all fat is equal and not all body types are equally efficient at producing heat. But as a general rule, fat people withstand cold better, all other things equal.

Not Without Hope (2025), it is a survival thriller based on the tragic 2009 fishing trip where four friends from Florida became stranded at sea. 2 were too cold.
Some body fat is a natural insulator and a source of energy to , maintain body temperature. Too much is not good.
Don't know but fat would help keep core temerature up obviously but that could mean skin temperature is lower and frost bite happens more rapidly.
