He wasn't. I watched it. Thats fake news. Trump & the Mexican president were no more edited out than Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani was in 2022. Trump was a class act all the way through. He presented the medals and the trophy to the winners, posed for a pictures which is the dine thing and left. The spainish and Argentinan players were respectful all the way through.

@lilBigPotato the issue is there were plenty of bad calls or bad non calls (like messi), but it's either incompetence or favoritism on the level of the refs or the body as a whole. Should Trump have gotten involved? No. Obviously that creates controversy from an already controversial leader. However, that should go to show how broken the sport is at certain levels. There are things about it that seem normal to you perhap (unless your team suffered it), that simply wouldn't fly over here. Fix the sport.

It was a red card. You can complain about other another player in a different game doing a similar foul and not getting a red card, but that's a problem of the other game, not the US. If there is a 100% wrong red card, there are official procedures to follow to contest it. Trump calling his best buddy isn't part of that.
Anyone thinking that you can't give a red card for this doesn't know anything about football. And because you absolutely can give this red card, it's a massive scandal that it got taken back. Because the rule has always been, unless it's a 100% proven wrong decision (e. g. you give the card to the wrong player), it's part of the game and stays.

Football isn't black and white. Some decisions are (offside, is the ball inside the goal, etc), many aren't, especially fouls. Different referees have different styles, that's part of the game. And even within the game, the referee can change their style. It depends on the game and the players. This is part of football and a lot of people have a love hate relationship with it. That's not something you will fix. Doesn't mean there isn't room for improvement (VAR for example should be consistent, which it isn't, but because of the nature of the game it's almost impossible to fix).

If you don't like the idea that I'm certain cases, the same action can have different outcome, then football is simply not got you. It's ok, not everyone needs to like every sport.

No universal rules seems to be a significant failing.
We have someone on here posting thar Argentina was forced out and that the organization did what it could to prevent a win and hand it to the Spanish team.
Seems like a chaotic sport.
If all it takes is a phone call and things are overturned, it's a recipe for disaster.
If the only argument is "well some refs see things differently and do it differently" you are inviting controversy.
I'm not saying mistakes never happen.
What you imply is a sport that doesn't even know it's own rules and leaves things to others discretion and suffers from heavy corruption.

@lilBigPotato I enjoy the sport, and have followed the US women's team for a while. That being said, it's clearly chaotic and poorly managed. I remember not long ago the US women's team defeating the Spanish team, and many questionable calls were made. Plenty believed the game was ripped away from the Spanish. Might have very well been true.

That needs a fix.
The clear corruption you have admitted (and is central to the scandal) is a perfect example.

The game has clear rules. But those rules explicitly leave some level of discretion to the referee. It's not a flaw, it's part of the game.
Also too many people just don't understand the rules or view things through their pink glasses. Like they compared this foul to one of Messi who didn't get a red card. Then they call it rigged and favourism (those words get thrown around way too loosely). But it was not the same. He hit him less badly and he still tried to hit the ball, while the ball was long gone with the US player. Nothing would have brought me more joy than Argentina and Messi getting kicked out early. But you need to see and understand the difference between both decisions.

The red card being overthrown isn't an issue of the games rules, it's an issue of corrupt leadership on both ends.
Also, increasing the number of teams this world cup just to have more games and with that more money didn't help. You also need to have the referees to support this, and there are only so many that do their job at the highest level. And with the majority of the top referees coming from Europe and FIFA trying to avoid having the referee from the same continent as one of the teams, it means that not always the best possible referees were chosen.

Many seem to claim Messi deserved a red card, if the American player did. This is a topic I'm largely speaking from ignorance, unlike others here. Perhaps you are right.

My point however is that there is clear corruption and that clearly needs to be resolved.
