It dates back to 1953

The CIA interfered with regime change in Iran in 1953, codenamed Operation Ajax, working alongside British intelligence to overthrow Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh

It's actually a counter coup if you look it up. Mossadegh overthrew the Shah of Iran.
There is also a debate on the influence of the coup by the US. Roosevelt was known to exaggerate his claims and it was largely rge mullahs that supported the return of the Shah.

It's actually largely a myth, created by liberals, islamists, and the CIA that needed to rebuild its image after the failed coup in Cuba.

The Shah had the legal right to remove Mossadegh, and was forced out of the country by him.

It's interesting when you look into it.

It's a convenient excuse for the regime, but it was an internally supported coup that the US likely had limited involvement or influence

None the less, I'd like to argue most of the arguments of the coup are false.
1. Mossadegh was not elected ddemocratically, and he actually became authoritarian as time went on.
2. The US didn't put the Shah in place, because he had held his position for 12 years before the coup took place.
3. The Shah used a power legally given to him which was to elect and remove any PM.

It draws a different picture when you realize that
