It was ignorance and bad advice.
He was advised that Iran was backwards and that the Iranian people would rise up against the government. He was told that Iran would roll over.

And his best buddy, the international criminal Netanyahu, who had tried to push the U. S. into a war with Iran for decades with false claims about nukes, forced Trump's hand by attacking first and then crying for help when Iran retaliated.

Now Iran has fucked the U. S. and Israel in the ass both militarily and economically and Trump is desperately trying to save face.

The fact is, there is no way to defeat Iran. It holds all the cards now and is pissed.
