I thought only The Hague can find world leaders guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity and sentence them. And the current leaders are war criminals themselves.

They sentenced him in absentia without a trial. He's currently hiding in Russia, and I don't think Putin will hand him over, but this is still concerning news. I hope he'll be okay. He's my favorite dictator. And if the Syrian government can bypass The Hague, who else can?

Saddam Hussein was tried by Iraq and executed. Any national court can try crimes against humanities if they have the legislation. Or put some through and make it apply retrospectively.

That might be a Bill of Attainder where it is made it illegal to be you. Efficient. "Are you Saddam Hussein"? "Yes". "Your Honor we have a full confession - sentence him". Saves a lot of bother

Honestly I think it would be easier to way to go out by surprised (shot in the back in the head out of nowhere) vs. waiting to be hanged. Think of Brad Pitt’s B movie “killing them softly”. Movie plot was stupid BUT Brad Pitt made an interesting observation as an assassin.

He said it was “kinder” to kill his targets by complete surprise. If they know it was coming they didn’t have time to panic and beg for their mothers.

Yes. The ICC is an additional forum in which to try crimes, for example where a county doesn't have an effective justice system Syria is not even a signatory to the ICC, nor is Russia (or the United States for that matter).

Yes. Syrian courts can legally sentence Assad, but the sentence cannot be enforced unless he is brought into Syrian custody.
