Why do students choose inane majors?

[Dargil]

Why do students borrow 10s of thousands of dollars and choose majors, like Women's Studies and the African American Experience that they'll never be able to make enough money to pay off their loans with? Student loans should be taken away from the federal government. It should be up to individual colleges to decide whether to lend money to students based on their earning power that should follow. That is what endowments should be for. If and when that happens, These screwball majors that people are taking will disappear.

Taxpayers should not pay the loans or guarantee them. That should be of colleges to evaluate the risk.

Heaven forbid public monies be spent on activities that bring cultural benefits instead of paying rich kids to get professional qualifications that they would have done anyway the benefits of which are almost entirely realised in their weekly earnings after graduation.

[Chazmatazz269]

Nothing is “free”. The problem is that these deadbeats think I should have to pay off their ignorant choices. That’s literally financial slavery. Grow up.

[Dargil]

While they work for Starbuck's

[Dargil]

@msc545 you are one of them.

[msc545]

I don't work for Starbucks if that's what you mean. As for being one of your problems, I'm glad to hear it. Part of my life's goal is to be a problem for people like you.

[Dargil]

Can I get you a latte?

[Dargil]

@msc545 what, exactly are people like me? I thought I was one of a kind.

[msc545]

One is more than enough

[Kaneki05]

Because they can make money, all they have to do is go on to become a teacher of that said thing or join some company that some bs easiest job in your life department based around it in which you'll get paid for basically doing nothing while pretending your consolation is important.
Why focus on law to take a stressful lawyer role or something when you can get a job that pays you for nothing. Might never pay off your debt either but you are earning while not doing any actual work.

[Agape93]

They do it because they want to learn that subject. Not every subject has to be tied to an economic benefit.

[Dargil]

But then, who pays the $300,000 student loans? Elon Musk?

[Agape93]

Nope, they do. That's how student loans work. They have to pay it off.

[Dargil]

Or default

[Agape93]

Per a basic Google search

"Once a federal student loan enters default (usually after 270 days of missed payments), the entire unpaid balance plus accrued interest becomes immediately due—a process called acceleration. The debt does not disappear; instead, the government triggers aggressive collection mechanisms that carry severe financial consequences."

[Dargil]

Taxpayers should not foot the bill.

[Agape93]

I agree, and they dont, especially since they canceled student debt forgiveness right after it started. Nice try.

[itss_lily]

its not always about money! some people are just passionate about a subject and want to learn more about it

[Dargil]

Taxpayers should not pay the bill.

[itss_lily]

why not?

[Twalli]

Some people don't know what their major is upon entering college. Since student loans are what allows some people to actually attend college in the first place, anyone who is undecided or changes their major would be at a disadvantage. I changed my major. I was lucky that my parents had enough financial stability to send me to college without financial aid (although I did have academic scholarships).

[fishbone77]

Then they whine you have to pay their loans off with your taxes. The government needs to refuse to give loans for these nonsense majors.

[Dargil]

Let colleges make the loans and determine the risk.

[canamlusciouslad73]

Because society has monetized everything, so those not wishing to study Business or STEM are left in the cold.

[Dargil]

Let them pay out of pocket

[darkcloud1945]

The only thing I can say to those people is that if brains were dynamite, they would not have enough to blow their noses

[exitseven]

There is not much work to get an A and all the hot women are there.

[Paige2006]

So they can say they have a college deree
