Because far too many college educated people are clueless morons.

College used to be for the wealthy and the gifted - colleges were private, and you (or your family) paid your tuition, or a wealthy person would "sponsor" a gifted person's advanced education via a scholarship.

Then, the G. I. Bill was passed after WWII, with the government agreeing to pay for college for anyone who had honorably served in the military. Existing colleges had to expand greatly, and many new colleges sprung up, but there were still far more students than industry needed, and a lot of those students lacked the necessary intelligence or base of education to succeed at higher levels. Still, this was "free money" and the schools wanted as much of it as possible. Thus there was a huge expansion in "liberal arts" in colleges - courses of study that weren't really applicable to jobs after college.

Still, lots of business people failed to differentiate between useful majors and frivolous ones - and they were encouraged not to, because those colleges didn't want to lose their money or have their "brand" devalued.

Degrees HAVE been devalued over time, however. Lots of college graduates can't write a business letter, balance a checkbook, create a budget, or knows the difference between a country or a continent. These are things that are important in a huge range of jobs, and that used to be required to understand before you could even apply for college.

We all know that plenty of college graduates ARE smart and knowledgeable, but so many are not, and it's usually those who are not who are the ones most likely to feel superior because of their worthless degree and try to lord it over people. THOSE are the people who are being put down - the people who think their parchment, rather than their actual education - makes them better than other people. Lots of people have the parchment but not the education.

Because the definition of wisdom is when you combine knowledge with practical experience.

Now one can achieve knowledge through all types of means and methods, through reading, through word of mouth through an academic institution, social media, internet, from your mom and dad...

But all knowledge, unless it is combined with practical experience does not equate to any degree of wisdom. So, college graduates, assume they have all the knowledge and skills they need to be successful, which is true... but they haven't achieved anything yet. And by the time they do succeed in some way, they look back at all the acquired wisdom they have gained to become successful and think how naive they were coming out of college.

There's a trend where people on the internet are saying college is a waste of time. Or that you'll be working at McDonald's with gender studies degree etc. People saying go into the trades and that you don't need college.

You can't trust what people say on the internet because the people that say not to go to college are the same people trying to sell a course or a trade school.

On the other hand some people say you won't be successful unless you go to college. Like with most things on the internet usually the truth is somewhere in between both sides. You can't trust everything someone says online. Always do your own research.

Some do. And some people are just easily offended. I'm critical of higher education. But not because I'm against education. It's because I think institutions of higher education do not care enough about what they're producing. Student debt has been a money making business for years. They're saddling many kids with debt, and shoe horning them into programs to fill thier institutions quotas without little regard to the students future.

They say "you're adults now it's time to figure it out on your own, and we'll answer your questions". Problem is most kids don't even know what questions to ask.

I guess what I'm saying is I don't have a problem with college. I have a problem with how kids are PREPARED for college. We as a nation are more educated then we've ever been. But we still have a skilled worker shortage. That should tell you something.

I haven't heard of this, per se, but I do know lifelong academics get put down and people with worthless degrees that they paid 40x their expected salary to get are put down. Those who made smart college moves? Never heard of them being put down for it, even in the REAL blue-collar areas.

because educated doesn't automatically mean intelligent. And lots of folks that went to college think they are better than anyone and have a self entitled attitude. You can study the most absurd stuff, like gender studies, and then have an insufferable attitude after

because many of them couldn't pour the shit out of their boot with the directions on the heel.

They can tell you the chemical composition of a broom but have no clue how to use one.
They don't have the common sense that god gave a goldfish.

Because being intelligent and educated are two different things. I think a lot of people not understanding that is frustrating for some that do understand.

Because we've been taught to believe that if you don't go to college then you're a dumbass. But I've known people with college degrees who couldn't even type up a legible report for work.
