I think it accurately captures the arrogance and irony of European Colonialism over a 500 year period.
Vikings were Europeans. They actually only left the Americas about 40 years before colombus sailed. Spain and Portugal knew there was land to the west across the Atlantic, they knew the earth was round. It would have been widely known there was land to the west in Europe especially anywhere the vikings had been from the byzantine empire to the Arabs to the italians and the English. I think when columbus sailed it was the first time the technology to actually go to the Americas safely existed and the first time funding for it existed and a power was willing to take the risk. I also believe the Portuguese were intending to go before spain but columbus stole a march in them.
@Just_Ken ,
The Vikings were the first Europeans to get wanderlust over the western horizon. That we know of. But they never really practiced colonialism in the Americas. Some archeologists believe the Norsemen got as far as places like Wisconsin. But they never really established long term colonies. Their culture was raiding and exploring, not civilization building. Too primitive at the time? A few hundred years ahead of the wave?
And the Portuguese eventually got involved, Brazil and mostly Africa.
America is also same as israhell
Both have snatched and stole land

I think it's horseshit.
1. Columbus never thought he discovered the Americas. Why? Because their not called the Columbias... they're called the Americas because they are named for Amerigo Vespucci, a contemporary of Columbus. It was Vespucci who realized that the land Columbus first came to was new to the Europeans.
2. The Polynesians may not have actually come to the Americas. They didn't even get to Easter Island until about 1300; that's not South America - that's Polynesia. There is evidence the Polynesians reached South America at some point around 1200-1300. But that's 200 years after the...
3. Vikings who came to North America around 1000 AD but didn't stick around. And they didn't think they found new land anyway.
4. The "Natives" aren't that native. There have been waves of cultures entering North America. For instance, the Inuits replaced the Thule people who replaced the Dorset people who replaced the pre-Dorset people. Humans aren't "native" anywhere except Africa.
Columbus never declared that he was the first to discover America. In fact from what I know he denied to his death that the land he had colonized was not the East Indies. He was still an asshole, don’t get me wrong.
I do agree with the point of the image overall, but what they mean by the discovery of America is that permanent and widespread connection was established between the continents.
It’s like the concept of relative motion.
Discovery is a matter of perspective.
If aliens landed today they can claim they discovered earth.
Doesn’t mean they did, since we beat them to it.
But it wouldn’t matter from their perspective.
haha! in my *skool a brat in my class asked that. the teacher explained 'for his european country he was first to discover the river or island or land or forest' etc. amerigo vespuchi. of course when kid asked it the whole classroom laughed because we realized he was right!
None of those in the pictures actually knew what they discovered. Polynesians floated nearby, the Indians crossed an ice bridge and wandered there but had no idea of anything, the Vikings didn’t know that it was a new continent and even Columbus didn’t know as he thought he made it to the Indies in Asia.
But Columbus told the others in Europe and the race was on. It was discovered and those who traded with Europe, Africa and Asia went there too and they did it in a massive way.
It fits him well; total garbage. Take away the bottom frame and you've got Prager U, as it's taught to elementary school kids in all those great red states.
Wrong as he didn't call it America.
Also he landed on a Caribbean Island, not on the mainland.
They are all wrong. Americas belong top Anunnaki
No one really knows who discovered our continent but it's been put to good use.
There were no "native peoples" in North America. All "native" tribes came over the "land bridge" in the Arctic.
Classic JudeoChristian writers of the history taking credit for their hubris
In 14 hundred and ninety two
Columbus sailed the ocean blue.
HOBCs ("Heartthrobby Older Black Cowboys!!!")
The picture is wrong because Columbus never thought that he "discovered America", he thought he actually found another way to India.
I agree. The USA isn’t white people’s land.
What comes to my mind is Mary Eastey.😪
It's pretty funny because it's true.
