What was the cause of the American Civil War?

I used to think it was because the north made laws forbidding slavery (which everyone agreed they can do after 1808) but-

Those laws to end slavery were after the war started. The problem was the constitution said "states must send back escaped people who were enslaved". Paul sent back an escaped slave but protested you should free him. Even ancient paul was progressive!

But the north made underground railroads to free slaves and obey this divine idea paul said. But that violated the constitution as above so the south wanted to withdraw. From union.

Keeping slaves was so important to the south they prepared for war. And the local south militia fired many times all night, at the federal troops in that place -who were there to protect it from other countries- like war 1812.

Finally in the morning the north returned fire and eventuallyy crushed the south.

Slavery was the main issue.
The Republican Party was an abolitionist party.
Lincoln won election, and the southern states that depended on slavery financially were fearful of Lincoln removing the practice.
They left the union, and the war began.
Lincoln hoped to end the war quickly, and was hesitant to make slavery the central issue until he was left with no choice.

Let's also not forget for decades leading up to he civil war that slavery was a major issue.
Bleeding Kansas? Missouri Compromise? Etc.
It was always about keeping the fragile union together

Slavery has no impact on that.

The conflict was fundamentally about states’ rights versus federal overreach, but the central issue was the slave trade.

It was the idea that the states are not beholden to the Union and could join and leave at will, vs. a federal government insistent that they could not leave the Union.
