Why do liberals in the U.S. have fewer children than conservatives?

There does appear to be a real fertility gap in the U. S., and it has become more pronounced over the past few decades. A 2026 survey of more than 7,000 Americans ages 18–54 found conservatives reporting 1.40 children on average versus 1.09 among liberals. Conservatives also said their ideal family size was larger: 2.71 children versus 2.16 for liberals. The difference remained statistically significant after controlling for age, sex, religion, race, income, marital status, and education. WHY?
