People suddenly become obsessed with “selfishness” when somebody votes according to their own financial interests. Yet in dating, self-interest is treated as completely normal. A woman can reject a man because he earns less, is shorter, less attractive, less successful, or simply doesn’t meet her standards, and everyone rushes to say, “She doesn’t owe him anything.” Fair enough. She doesn’t.
But then apply that exact logic somewhere else and people lose their minds. If nobody owes another person a relationship, attention, attraction, or a better standard of living through dating, why is a wealthy person supposedly morally obligated to sacrifice his own financial interests for strangers?
You can’t spend years telling people, “Nobody owes you anything,” and then suddenly change the rule to, “Actually, rich people owe everybody else their money.” Either acting in your own interests is acceptable or it isn’t. You don’t get to celebrate ruthless personal choice when it benefits you and then condemn somebody else for making a political or financial choice that benefits them.
