Is paying students to attend school a smart fix or a harmful bribe?

I found out about this the other day, and I think it is absolutely crazy that kids are actually getting paid to go to school nowadays. At first, I was joking around like, "man, why wasn’t this a thing when I was in school?”

The program says that students get paid for perfect attendance during designated cycles. If they miss a single hour or come in late and tardy, they don’t get a dime. Apparently, this is a major initiative being pushed by the Detroit Public Schools Community District to fight massive chronic absenteeism numbers.

But man, back when I was going to school, we went to class regardless of how we felt. No matter how much we complained or didn’t want to go, our parents made us wake up and walk through those doors anyway. We didn't need a cash prize just to show up and do what we were supposed to do. I get that absenteeism rates are high and Detroit is trying to fix a deeply struggling system, but paying kids just to attend feels wild.

I honestly don’t think this does any real good for them in the long run. It teaches a bad lesson because they will probably grow up thinking and expecting to get a reward for every single thing they are supposed to do in life. Real life doesn't hand out cash prizes just for showing up to your basic responsibilities.

What do y'all think about this? Is bribing kids a smart, modern solution to get them into classrooms, or is it a bad look that completely ruins basic discipline and personal responsibility?

I think that whatever it takes to get kids to learn and be off the streets being useless has benefits to it.

But if they're just showing up and not learning anything, then that defeats the purpose.

Personally, I hardly ever went to school. 🏫 I absolutely hated it!! It was just a place to hook up with my friends and during lunchtime I would just hop on a bus and go home to my happy place, my bedroom.

My Mom and I did get called into court for my truency and I felt bad for my Mom because she couldn't control me.

When I was 16 I was going to school and working at the same time. I became more responsible when I was able to start driving my car.🚗

I did graduate and received my diploma.🙂

I like this idea. I mean, my personal opinion about an 8 hour shift that doesn't get you paid and involves a lot of wasted time... not a very positive opinion. I remember North Hollywood High was literally a fucking prison sentence for the day, and I got myself into a charter school with the movie star kids where I only went in for 2 hours a week... regular HS education. Turns out all that watching the Wizard of Oz isn't really helping shit.

I don't want to make this political, but you can guess "School choice" is a big one for me. But if we're going the left wing route of forcing these kids to go to whatever school, they might as well pay the kids to put themselves through prison days.

I dunno, I thought "skip school and spend your life dirt poor" was pretty good incentive once upon a time. But these days, kids are graduating from university with $250,000 in debt and getting jobs flipping burgers for minimum wage so... maybe up is down now.

It’s all about presidential paper & if paying students to show up works I think they should continue to do it. On the other side of things I think the better your grades are the more you should get paid.

You're not the brightest if you don't understand this has been the case in Europe and other places, for decades.

In some places, education is even free.

It's nothing to do with "bribe". Rather, students have to live and feed themselves while studying. They are more likely to succeed and even pay into the economy while doing so, if they feel the country is doing them a good turn.

That is called "living wage" and "crime of necesity" in democrat words. After agreeing to work for whatever salary- they demand "give us a living wage".
Oh and they are not stealing 'just one can to drink' in the shop! But call it necesity.
