The vastness of the Russian Federation has made it hard to conquer by numerous countries. The mongol horde was the last successful attempt but Ukraine has been able to show that it's vastness can be turned against it.
Wealth is no longer based on vast lands. The country of the mind is basis of wealth now. it is the 9th largest country population which is good for armies but perhaps encourages mindless meat waves.
It seems the technical skills of it's population has degraded since the Soviet days as well.
Russia has nuclear deterrence and Russia thinks they have a drone advantage at the moment but they are wrong. Thinking Ukraine produces all those drone components without having a backyard in Europe is naive. NATO even without US could easily reach air superiority 1000km deep inside Russia and block without consequences all trade passages for Russian ports in Black, Baltic and North Sea. Russian ground forces without air support while being bombed permanently would collapse pretty soon if they would attack Baltic states. If Ukraine had more operative fighter jets and more guided bombs which can be dropped precisely from high altitude, Russia would probably be forced soon to leave Ukraine. However for EU and NATO this conflict is better than and unstable peace.
Even with arms and assistance from NATO countries, Ukraine has proven to be powerless in confronting Russia. All Russia wanted was a peace agreement that protected its national security. But the longer Ukraine refuses, the more damage it will suffer. The end is inevitable.
NATO tried to fuck around and found out that it is impotent against Russia. Russia has superior arms and arms manufacturing, and its economy is growing.
Russia's military power is in the masses, not the classes. Hundreds of divisions and thousands of units of dumb iron, plus crude nuclear weapons. Their WW2 strategy was simply to send meatwave after meatwave into the enemy lines, until the Nazis ran out of bullets.
I think Russia does have a small advantage which is they still have a warrior generation.
Most first world countries haven’t been in a formal all out war in a long time. Just the occasional military operation. Young soldiers today were born in the mid 2000’s
So going to war with the battle hardened Russians would not he without casualties.
And that’s why they aren’t underestimated at all. They’re not unbeatable but the cost is very high.
history like 1500s? russia had massive success defeating a strong muslim leader at Battle of Chuvash Cape. it took time but in fourteen years, by 1598 Kuchum was defeated on the banks of the Ob. so the Russians slowly conquered the Khanate. in 1600s they were invincible conquering local tribes all the way from west siberia to pacific coast and even into north america. the part we got from them.
good point. all the strength is in east ukraine. ukraine could invade north towards moscow almost unopposed. forcing russia to withdraw most from east ukraine so they also retake it. just bring winter coats and start next spring. not September.

@strateguy632 this is true but also the Royal Navy from 1939-45 was blockading Germany & italy from all maritime trade. Something like 40% of medium tank strength of the soviet union was British tanks in 1942. The British kept the Soviets in the war after barbarossa

I agree especially if people insist that the Russians alone stopped the Nazi advances during WW2.
The allied forces (mostly due to the American finances and supplies) helped the Russians push back and eventually kill Hitler's troops.
And, now, Ukraine is humiliating Russia in some battles of their war.

They attacked into Ukraine vs about a 6 to 1 defender's advantage. Everyone who knew real military history knew that Russia was making a huge mistake.
