My impression of De Gaulle is that he was first and foremost a French Patriot during a time when that was no easy thing to be. WWI, the Vichy government, WWII and the French resistance to Nazi conquest, the end of French Colonialism in Africa. And a right wing fascist plot by elements of the French military who wanted Algeria to remain a French colony. He demanded and got respect for France in a post WWII Europe and NATO alliance. He mage sure France got their fair share the post war economic boom in Europe. He led France to become a nuclear power during the cold war, thus guaranteeing his country a place at the adult table when it came to regional and world policy of the superpowers. All in all De Gaulle was a complex man in complex times. But he was always a French patriot. France could have done worse than De Gaulle.

what is his legacy?
he handled some tough times with a stiff upper lip. Proud French man.
He may be pleased today to see a good chunk of the world including Japan displaying items like it's France and he may be a bit agasp to see what's become of his beloved country overrun by people whom likely don't belong there, don't respect it.

However, his independence regarding NATO in 1966 was not appreciated by fellow NATO members although it was understandable.

I don't know enough about him and his legacy. What I DO know is that every city and small town in France has a "Charles de Gaulle" rue or boulevard or street!

He stabilized the formerly wonky French Republic, though he tried to interfere in the affairs of our largely French-speaking Quebec Province.
