Honestly, I think there's a strong argument that Yemen might have been better off remaining two separate countries, at least until both sides had stronger political institutions and a workable plan for unification.
North and South Yemen had different political systems, ideological backgrounds, and historical experiences before unifying in 1990. Bringing them together on paper didn't automatically resolve those differences or create equal trust between the two sides.
The problem wasn't necessarily unification itself, but how it was handled. Political power struggles, economic inequalities, and the failure to build a genuinely inclusive system contributed to tensions, including the 1994 civil war.
That said, I wouldn't automatically assume that keeping Yemen divided would have guaranteed peace. South Yemen had its own internal conflicts, and North Yemen also experienced serious instability. Two separate countries could still have faced wars, authoritarian governments, and economic difficulties.
Personally, I think the more important question is whether Yemen's leaders could have built a fair political arrangement that respected the interests and identities of both sides.
Unification without genuine political inclusion can create as many problems as division, but separation alone doesn't guarantee peace either.
Sometimes, two countries sharing a peninsula may be better served by peaceful cooperation than by forcing political unity before the necessary foundations are in place.
Yemen was once a jewish state and all the ancient cities founded on north eastern coast of the red sea were founded by jews all the way into africa. This land was promised to thr Jews and one day will return to the greater Israel.
One might ask whether America may have better stayed individual colonies.
