How can a couple living on $19 an hour struggle without rent or kids?

I calculated my equivalent net hourly wage combining my Social Security disabilty + my part time job. I make equivalent to $19.04 an hour, equivalent to someone working a 40 hour work week making that wage (which I only work 24 hours a week).

So if me and my wife are living on my equivalent $19.04 an hour (net) without any kids, a mortgage, or even a rent payment, does this speak volumes to how shitty the US economy is?

Well, if the only responsibilities you have is just feeding yourself, then I guess it’s doable unless you have a car because living expenses is the biggest amount of money spent when it comes to rent or a mortgage , it’s it’s sad that most of our money goes to housing for shelter

The economy is not shitty but your circumstances are. I live in the most expensive state in the lower 48 and it costs a lot to llive here. My wife and I both have good jobs and can afford to live here. although it is tight sometimes.

She was fired recently for refusing to work without proper protective equipment. The business refused to get properly fitted gloves, and she walked out. Now she is waiting until after the holiday season is over before applying to new roles. She struggles with public-facing roles worse than I do. She is on the Autistic Spectrum too.

I am on SSDI, not SSI. There is a difference. I worked long enough to qualify for SSDI. SSDI allows me to work a part time job but still keep my full benefit amount.
