Why do people who warn about misinformation still trust mainstream media?

For years I've heard people, mostly people on the left, complain that there's too much misinformation in the world and how we need to protect young people from social media by having more restrictions. Yet these are the same people who believe we should trust the information we hear and see on TV, as if the mainstream media can be trusted to give us accurate and truthful information. Am I missing something?

This is far from an absolute. Misinformation and disinformation are major problems in the US. I am certain of that AND i know that the mainstream news is a major part of the problem.
The people to whom you are referring want to control which information is available to everyone; their version of “the truth” and/or their version of “the facts”. That’s why they invested so much time, energy and money into controlling the education system. That’s also why they killed Charlie Kirk. He was helping young people to realize that they were being told what to think rather than being taught how to think for themselves. They were listening and learning, and that threatened the democrats’ power base.
This isn’t a strictly one-sided tendency either. There are plenty of things conservatives want you to just believe without questioning. They want you to believe that Drumpf dumped Elon because he and DOGE was done ferreting out waste, fraud and abuse. The truth is that they were just done with the democrats’ waste, fraud and abuse. If you believe that republicans and MAGA don’t have dirty money, you are part of the problem.
They want you to believe that democrats voted against the “big, beautiful bill” because they “hate America”. The truth is there are a lot more and bigger tax breaks for the wealthy than there are for the working class and Drumpf & his cronies rejected much bigger tax cuts for the working class that were proposed by democrats. They want you to believe republicans are the “party of fiscal responsibility”. Meanwhile, the last two times the federal budget was balanced were under democrat presidents. They were also two of the most prosperous eras for the US in the last century. They want you to believe that they want a smaller federal government, but they support a great deal of government overreach. They’re no different from the democrats. They just want different departments to be bigger and cost more.
The “two-party” system is a function of Tweedism, and it’s all one great big con. Like George Carlin said, “It’s one great big party, but you’re not invited.”
We have no hope of turning this ship around until the majority of US wake up to that harsh reality.

It's the old, 'Trust the experts, trust the science' crowd. They love to crow about trusting their favored institutions -- until those institutions no longer support their narrative. A few years ago, in Australia, a scientist published a research paper finding that the Great Barrier Reef had more new coral growth in 2019 than at any time since 1985, and the left went berserk, firing him and obliterating any records of his research. Why? Because it didn't support their climate alarmism narrative.

I have not noticed misinformation with our mainstream media. Just because you don’t like the content, it’s not misinformation. Besides, they are the professionals, who is supposed to replace them? Some pimplefaced kid making angry videos about Ivermectin in his mother’s basement? 🙄

Mostly nobody complains when it agrees with them, people are highly bias a fact of life and your implication of mostly left is also a proof cause right do it equally to the same degree.

Anything that the moonbats think would benefit President Trump is misinformation. If they read that Trump is a pedophile in the mens room at the bus station it is the gospel truth.
