What does it mean if someone calls you "doll"?

I didn't even know you can call people that until I went to the US for vacations.

now I'm wondering, what does it mean? and why did a stranger call me that? did he think I look like a brainless barbie doll? :S

depends on the context.

While some people may use it in a sexist way, most just mean it as a compliment, like your really pretty and seem perfect.

Like say your hanging out with a guy (bf or not, whatever) and you grab him a beer or something. He may call you a doll because not only does he think you look perfect, but your very nice to him as well.

I guess the saying may have come from the barbie doll thing but I think it's evolved into a real compliment.

ok but what if its a stranger who just says doll when he passes you by?

and he couldn't have meant it as a compliment, I looked really ugly that day

you probably didn't since most girls think they look fat or ugly. he probably meant it.

if its a complete stranger that you werent interacting with at all then he's just a weirdo. a weirdo whos giving you a completely normal and nice compliment

i did look ugly on that particular day. I was wearingflip flops and had pretty much no make up on etc. I guess its a girl's thing then. and he was a weirdo lol :)

It's a contraction of "living doll". You can either take it as a compliment or toss a womens lib fit and get your panties all up in a bunch. ; - )

Good for me. It used to be a common expression to call an attractive woman "a living doll", and then it was shortened merely to "doll". The rest of it can remain a mystery. ; - )

If someone called me 'doll' I would take it as a compliment. However, to be honest I do dislike how people have a tendancy to diminish the value of such words with overuse and insincerity.
