Kids who get bullied in school deserve it because they don't stand up for themselves...

...No. When you are uncomfortable / being threatened, your fight-or-flight reflex kicks in. Self-preservation is a basic function that all living things have. The difference is in the experiences one has had with that particular reflex.

Some kids are abused at home by their bigger and stronger parents / siblings. What would be your flight reflex in such a situation? You can't outrun them, you can't overpower them, so you build a defensive barrier.

Some kids just don't understand the concept of bullying because they are raised a bit too well. Again, they don't deserve it because of this, their brains just can't work like a bully's. So their fight-or-flight reflex doesn't function in this situation because they're rather confounded at the behavior.

There's many more reasons why someone could avoid "standing up" for themselves. None of them ever deserving of being bullied even more.

In a natural, "caveman" sense? Yes. Nature knows nothing about emotions or feelings or anything like that. It only recognizes those who stand strong and can survive for themselves.

However we aren't cavemen and women, so the burden lies with both the bully-er as well as his/her parents nowadays. I think a small bit of that caveman stance still remains and the kid obviously needs to stand up and protect themselves, because that's just how the world works- you look out for your own because that's what everyone else does. It's a great lesson to learn. However, it's senseless to bully someone for any reason so the little sh*t who is doing the bullying needs to realize it and quit being a tool. It's unnecessary aggression towards someone else who is doing nothing to warrant it.

To a certain extent yes and this is coming from someone who was bullied. I was bullied by girls all the way through primary school. I was a quiet shy kid that was taught manners and respect by my parents.But at home I was a completely different person than I was at school. I started playing sport when I was ten and played on a boys hurling(look it up) team and its a tough hard game. This caused my confidence to grow and the bullies attitude change towards me as I was the only girl good enough to get on the team and they saw a different side to me on the pitch especially when they were playing against me in training. I have never suffered bullying since because I learned how to stand up for myself and I do not tolerate anyone who tries to bully others no matter who they are

Your situation is unique, but most kids who do stand up for themselves get sh*t for it. they get their ass beat and often times get suspended or even expelled from the school along with the bully. The consequences are far to great for kids to stand up for themselves.

Every bullying situation is unique. In my secondary school(high school) bullying wasn't tolerated, not by the teachers/authorities but by the students themselves. If somebody tried to bully another the bully would be pulled aside an quiet word would be said in their ear. No one was ever expelled or suspended for bullying. But I went through the Irish school system I'm presuming you're from the US?

The truth is, most of the kids who get bullied/picked on at school are actually treated the same way in their home. Receiving that kind of repeated treatment creates a belief system w/n that kid. Then they venture out into the world (school) with this unconscious belief that people are going to treat them poorly, and as a result, people do.

Nobody deserves to be bullied. Many bullies are bullied themselves either at home or elsewhere so they turn it on others to compensate. Often times standing up to a bully only makes it worse. The one time a girl tried to bully me, I made a joke out of it and she didn't bother me again because she realized she can't get to me. She actually tried to be my friend after, that wasn't going to happen.

No, kids don't get bullied because 'they don't stand up for themselves' they get bullied because cruel people target them for no apparent reason. I can see what she means in a way, however even standing up for yourself against a bully isn't going to solve the issue.

No way, for starters, no one deserves to be bullied...ever! And usually people getting bullied aren't physically able to stand up for themselves, and when they try, they just get bullied more :/

No one should be bullied and its not about if they deserve it or not! Even if they stand up for themselves it can cause even more problems. A lot of times they are just innocent and there is really no good reason to bully anyone else.

Well, I was bullied in the past. I think I kinda deserve it. That's because I'm worthless. Sometimes I thought much about self harm and imagining a plan of suicide ever since. I'm worried I'm still alive though.
