+1 yI really do not think it is based on gender as much as some silly-heads like to follow stereo types.
Some women like clothing and lots of it, or cosmetics - lets label these as 'toys'.
Some men like games and lots of them, or computers, - lets label these as 'toys'
Each of us as female/male buy the some of the same, different, and other items we want and/or need.
Now if there is more males then females - the numbers are increased for guy purchases, and the same applies to women but this is offset by another thing that is true in my culture following this statement.
It is most common for women to do the shopping for ourselves, the family, and hubby - so this renders the statistical percents and stereotypes false.
But if you want to go a more pointed direction, we can also looks at something like this simple way to put it.
Guys want toys / objects to satisfy themselves and get bored easily with it and need more and more - self-serving
Women want products / clothing [toys] to make themselves feel better about ourselves and to look better for our man / others - which gives hubbies the ability to boast about how pretty we are. - Not self-serving as guys in this situation.
You as another Commenter may pick it apart to argue, bash, and hate me, but I would suggest if you want to understand what I am saying - read it with a clear, none-sexist / trolling / augmentative mind.
If you want it even more simple - what you apply to one cultures gender and/or the world with based 'factual's' need to have many factors taken into account before you can actually make any real data toward it. This has not happened yet, so, no one actually knows, everyone just goes on what they are told by people who are angry over and over for many years.14 Reply- +1 y
I don't mean to disagree, but I don't think that's completely fair to guys... it's based on the idea that men and women do the exact same things for totally different reasons -- the girl's reason's being right and the guy's being wrong, specifically. It's like a double standard. My boyfriend calls me out on this all the time, he says "when you do it, it's right; when I do it, it's wrong" then says I'm a hypocrite etc. So I don't think it's really fair to judge men and women so differently when
- +1 y
they're doing basically the same thing which is buying stuff, spending money etc.
- +1 y
Um.. we do some of the same things for the same reasons, and same things for different reasons. Its really relative to the situation and individual.
I pointed this out using common stereo-types to emphasize relations that I felt made a point to answer the question.
We cannot judge men and women exactly the same in every situation, because no matter what we have in common, food, air, love, or what we do not; word usage and meaning, understanding, etc. - +1 y
But, if I understand you correctly, you are referencing individualism vs general terms to answer a question.
So it is not really something I would like to have had to answered as it can go into a very very very very very long detail oriented talk.
Calculate every single individual situation - its a cookie, I wish we could.

Because I knew a girl who expected tons of jewelry from every guy she dated... but then there's also my dad, who bought 8 TVs for our house (including a massive one for our theater downstairs), a Mercedes, a pool table, and hot tub just because. XD My mom says "he works hard and he wants to have something to show for it." And that's why we can't afford to live in our house anymore and are being forced to move again lol.

Good!, it'll hopefully teach him some self control
+1 yDoes it matter? They're both materialistic, just in different ways. They're both annoying. You're clearly trying to win an argument with this, so I'm going to vote whichever one you think is more materialistic because that's the one you want me to say. Both genders are annoying about it, so I don't think it matters which one is "more" materialistic. But there you go, I gave you a vote in your argument. Be happy.
01 Reply- +1 y
no, I want you to have your own opinion, not just agree with me!
+1 yMen are more materialistic in my opinion. I say men because we try to show possession of our girlfriends, our cars, our muscles, our ego and pride. We usually try to intimidate others with our possessions because it is basically an Alpha versus a Beta, Alpha versus Alpha or Alpha versus Omega. We see this at every party, movie theater and One-way Lane. We buy suits, "bling" and certain things that show those items are the guys primary trait.

Nah, the most materialistic people are those that actually care about all that bulls--t.

Damn you beat me to it! LOL 100% true on that one.

I agree with Nicholas men are all about success and doing what they have to do to get that success which can really affect the amount of money they spend

Excuse me sir, I'm looking for the gym...would it be, THIS way?
Or, THAT way?

I don't disagree with what you said in terms of what men buy, but, I believe, you completely missed the mark on why we do this.
I believe that men buy these things, primarily, to get women because women are, really, the materialistic ones. If there weren't women to impress, I'm not sure guys would care that much.
388 opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. Well idk, a lot of women seem obsessed with shopping. And I don't understand the whole obsession with diamond rings and all that.
Men do have different degrees of being materialistic, I think in general probably women but it's not by a landslide.00 Reply

I think it's women, on average.I don't know if it's true but a lot of guys say they'd live in a cabin in the woods and grow/hunt everything they need themselves, if it wasn't to get women.Personally I couldn't do that. I'd want a house, a car, enough money to buy my children what they need without having to worry if we will make ends meet
And I don't think it's a bad thing. It's in our nature to want a safe, stable home for ourselves and our children11 Reply- +1 y
Just shows how much of a primal instinct we still have. Men still want to go hunt and live in the wilderness while women still want to stay at home and be with the children. The only thing that has changed is that we've gotten smarter and the idea of money
+1 yIt's not about gender; it's about upbringing.
I've dated some very materialistic, rich guys who obsessed over doing cool, new stuff to their car and buying expensive things.43 Reply- +1 y
so are you saying it's men?
- +1 y
I don't think one whole gender can be more materialistic. I think it's very silly and borderline stupid to claim that an entire gender is more materialisitc. Kim K is probably one of the most mterialistic people on this planet. She's a female. Little Wayne is extremely materialistic, spending thousands of dollars on fake golden teeth. He's a male. You can't just clump materialism with one whole gender
- +1 y
in general though, which is it?
you live in a consumer society. when in crisis ., people are told to shop'. what difference do your genitals make.

Yes, but which gender does it more?

Women will buy lots of clothes, shoes, hair and skin products...
Women want Jewellery...
Guy's are all about cars, big boy toys, computers and so on...04 Reply- +1 y
Because it's seen as gay, to be metro (clothes, etc..). Plus they've been making electronics harder for women to understand so that men can have something of their own!

I am completely uninterested by cars, does that make me less of a male?

ur still a guy, just not a cool guy, ha! jk jk

35 Reply- +1 y
Nope women are more superficial as well, contrary to popular belief. Dating experts as well as psychologists have proven this.

Hah, gotta say, I've heard that one a million times.

She's probably ugly herself. Ugly girls have high expectations (although there are certain "hot" women that are extremely shallow as well)
+1 yI think it'd be more effective to ask which culture is. American/European culture is materialistic both men and women. Other cultures aren't. That's how I think of it anyway
00 ReplyWomen like to waste money on things that smell good and are shiny. Men like things that are actually fun or serve a purpose.

I like hings that smell good and that are shiny too however I like my guy things as well. its perfectly OK to like both. I was just curious as to who was more materialistic, not what they buy

03 Reply- +1 y
yes, but who does it more, again, avoiding the question
- +1 y
I didn't avoid the question. I think it's equal. But to add to my answer, I think women are more judgmental of others in terms of what a person has.
- +1 y
ok
+1 yFemales most definitely. I have a best friend that constantly talks about her material things and that she can't live without them.
01 ReplyEasily women. Men can buy things, but it's usually to impress women and get laid. Women buy things just for themselves.
01 Reply- +1 y
Both examples exhibit materialism.
+1 yI think both genders are about the same. Women may love shopping, but guys almost seem to fall in love with their smart phones and stuff.

07 Reply- +1 y
You don't make sense
- +1 y
Any sort of generalization in terms of gender is merely a conceptual image created from fragments of ideas and "facts" of cultural origin, but not actual experience or anything that is proven. Thus, considering we are all individuals, it cannot be judged which "types" of people are more materialistic, as such "characteristical types" do not exist in this form.
- +1 y
i asked a question. just answer the damn question
- +1 y
The answer is that there is no answer as the question is invalid.

just answer it
