Girls: What's your opinion on guys who practice martial arts?

I'm talking about the multilevel component, and not about guys who brag about it or even worse, use it to prove something. Also, not specifically for Eastern Martial Arts (karate, kung-fu) but also Western (boxing, MMA, Pancration).

I want opinions on the physique/workout it gives a guy, the 'level of sexy' (for example, I hear many girls say that 'footballers are sexy') but most importantly the spiritual content of someone who practices a potentially deadly art, yet has the mental composure to not brag about it. In general, I want to know how it would feel to date/be in a relationship with a martial artist.

Please, take this question as a light and fun one. I'm not fishing for compliments but honest opinions. I'm mostly asking because there's a new girl in my class and I'd like to see how a woman views men who practice MA. If you have anything to add, feel free!

I've been doing martial arts (2 traditional styles + 1 modern) since I was 12. In that time I've seen a lot of people (probably 60-70% male) come and go. The physique is definitely better in hard-core traditional styles, based on my experience.

It's definitely not a make-or-break item for me, and honestly I could care less whether or not he participates in the art.

BUT if he does it poorly, then it's pretty much as close to a dealbreaker as substance abuse is for me. Martial arts is important to me because I've been doing it for most of my life. Experiencing someone doing it poorly is like starving for a week, then watching your favorite cake being slowly steamrollered by a pickup truck.

On the plus side though, (if he was good at what he did) it's a comfort to me that I wouldn't have to worry about protecting him in a life-threatening situation (or deal with the emotional fallout that would occur later if I did). People who don't know how to fight tend to make about as many stupid decisions as those who THINK they know how to fight. Self-control/discipline is always a plus in relationships, and from what I've seen, martial arts (when practiced consistently for an extended period of time) almost always affords at least some measure of that to a person.

A guy who is akready cute... Say on a scale of 1-10... Say he's a 7...well if he's good at martial arts, he becomes like a 9.. I love strong, disciplined men. The thought of a guy who can protect you. Now... I don't really like boxing or MMA, it just seems macho to me, like they're compensating... But I would be proud to date a guy who was a black belt or could hold his own on the mat. It's extremely sexy. :).

Guys who are ripped are hot, but just don't get overdone. It's disgusting...and for the record...I'd choose a martial artist over a football player ANY day,

For me, I think guys who pratices martial arts are dependable, at least for me... Because me myself I started to become a Karate instructor by the age of 14, so it's kind of hard for me to find a man who can protect me without me feeling like if anything happen, big possibility I will be the one who will jump out and fight lol. But yeah, I think it's better than no skill. After all woman wants a man who can make them feel protected under their care :)

I know martial arts. I had to do a presentation my senior year in high school about a hobby I have. So, I talked about the martial arts I used to take. A lot of the girls in class thought it was cool. One girl even did a few kicking and punching movements at the end of class for fun. So, girls like it when a guy knows martial arts.

i am learning mixed martial arts from last 19 months..and I think it tunes a persons mind with body, I was angry most of the times and that's why I joined it and it really helped...i love MMA from my soul

I have a second degree black belt in Karate. I love it. It is the best exercise both mentally and physically. I have dated guys who practice MA. I am fine with it. It's like double the trouble. They are the only guys who find a girl with a black eye sexy. :D

I love martial arts. I want to learn a delicate kind too, I mean some kind that's suitable for girls and helps me protect myself and at the same time helps me be mentally and spiritually strong. :)

So of course, for me, martial art guys are awesome! They are strong not just physically, but mentally too! Nothing more attractive than a guy who can control himself. Five stars. :)

Haha, thanks! I might be able to help here...first of all, you could try Cardio Kickboxing. It involves all the training we do, just without sparring. A good instructor will automatically adapt his teachings to include self-defense, and kickboxing is a beast in self-defense! Also, Tae Kwon Do is a good combination of powerful strikes, yet spiritual components that can be both delicate and ruthless.

If you'd like to keep away of striking, Judo is good because it only includes grappling.

I was actually going to say Judo as well. No striking and it's a great way to learn how to defend yourself. You could also look into doing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Yeah I want to avoid the powerful strikes, my figure is small and I don't think I can handle something powerful. So I was looking for something delicate but lethal. My friend has the black belt in Tae Kwon Do and she advised me to learn it too. A guy advised me to learn Internal Martial Arts, no fighting and you can bring down your opponent silently. And here you just suggested Kickboxing and Judo... Now I find myself in the middle many choices.

If you have to choose between all these, I would try to find a Tae Kwon-Do instructor who is reputable for his knowledge of other martial arts. My second Tae Kwon-Do instructor was a 5 Dan Black Belt in TKD and 3 Dan Black Belt in Real Aikido, which is a self-defense art specifically designed to allow everyone to bring down bigger opponents.You could also try Brazilian arts...Brazilian Ju Jitsu is a very efficient ground fighting discipline, and you could always go for Capoeira...it IS deadly!

Hmm I guess I would try Tae Kwon Do then I'm thinking of internal martial too, but since 2 people advised me to try Tae Kwon Do, I will try it.. thank you for your advice. :)

Marital art? Sorry, I'm still single.

Just kidding :D I am currently in a kickboxing class. I used to do Tae Kwon-Do in the past and I think it's my favorite art. In the future, I plan on mixing many different arts, not so much for MMA competition as for my own desire of a well-rounded education. I also know some Real Aikido, since my TKD teacher used to teach that, too.

Um...I suppose I don't mind them. The violence doesn't bother me and neither does the dedication. However, all the MMA fighters I have met have been very rude and have ego problems.

That's because unfortunately, most MMA fighters tend to be disconnected fom the martial arts component. They only look out for the most efficient way to knock someone out, and no respect. Until someone shows them wrong, which is when they develop those ego problems.

I think those guys are pretty attractive and badass but I would be way too worried to ever date one, especially a boxer because of all the injuries and brain damage.

First of all, I'm sorry but you have no clue about martial arts if you think they're all violent. In fact, the biggest challenge in any traditional MA is to be mentally strong and avoid all conflicts unless utterly necessary. As for getting wounded...just compare yearly injury rates between football and boxing. Also, death rates. And then tell me which is one is more offensive!
