Why do guys put their hands in front of their crotch?

When I'm at work male customers always do this. I work at a grocery store. Then when their below the waist part isn't seem by the counter they move their hands. Is it because they are hard

No, it's just a naturally comfortable place to put your hands. Letting them dangle at your sides can be hard on the shoulders for long periods of time. I either put my hands in my pocket or clasp them together in front of my crotch. It's just a comfort thing.
