Way before he died I always thought he was a great actor. Every film he was in that I've seen he always nailed it (Capote, Flawess, etc) The Academy Award (among other awrd shows) already honored him for his acting with awards and nominations so its not like when he was alive nobody cared about his movies or acting.

and I mentioned the Academy because its the highest acting award & he won one & earned several nods so it goes to show that when he was alive he was getting praise. Of course an Ashton Kutcher is gonna be more known than a Phillip Seymour Hoffman...depending on who you ask.

I think a lot of people who didn't know his work or had only heard of him will monopolize and give condolences (and nothing is wrong with giving condolences) but a lot will pretend as if they were a fan.

He wasn't an overrated actor. His acting was great enough to receive the praise.
