Right-wing reactionary politicians have claimed to represent ordinary Americans since the time of the passage of the Voting Rights Act—on August 6, 1965, exactly 59 years ago today—by insisting that a government that works for communities is a “socialist” plan to elevate undeserving women and racial, ethnic, and gender minorities at the expense of hardworking white men.

Historically, though, rural America has quite often been the heart of the country’s progressive politics, and the Midwest has had a central place in that progressivism. Walz reintegrates that history with today’s Democratic Party.

That reintegration has left the Republicans flatfooted. Trump and J. D. Vance expected to continue their posturing as champions of the common man, but on that front the credentials of a New York real estate developer who inherited millions of dollars and of a Yale-educated venture capitalist pale next to a Nebraska-born schoolteacher. Bryan Metzger, politics reporter at Business Insider, pointed out that J. D. Vance tried to hit Walz as a “San Francisco-style liberal,” but while Vance lived in San Francisco as a venture capitalist between 2013 and 2017, Walz went to San Francisco for the first time just last month.

Trump calls Ted Cruz "Lyin' Ted," insults his wife's looks, and implies his dad took part in JFK's assassination, and Cruz is a big Trump supporter.

Trump insults Mitch McConnell's wife over and over and over, and not only does Mitch not stand up for his wife, he whole-heartedly endorses Trump.

DeSantis endorses Trump, Trump calls him "Desantcis," and DeSantis stands by his endorsement.

Trump supports Bob Good's primary opponent, and Good still endorsed Trump.

Kamala Harris has selected Tim Walz, the current governor of Minnesota, as her VP. Was this a good move or a bad move? Will this help or hurt her?

It's one of those things you hear about from time to time but it's necissarily a white collar crime and specifically a rich person's crime. Because of that I don't think many people really understand what it is or, more importantly, why it is illegal.

I own a Class A RV. I am preparing it for evacuation if Kameltoe Harris wins and civil unrest begins or we are threatened by international conflict.

I just recently lost my job. My socialist sister just lost hers too (hopefully she learns her lesson on who to vote for next time). Plenty are losing jobs right now and we are in the midst of a tech recession. I don't know if I will be able to find work again anytime soon in my industry. I think we are going to see a lot of underemployed or unemployed tech workers. Luckily, I have enough savings to pay bills in the meantime.

We've all seen or soon will the latest questionable shooting death of a black person. Which raises to the head again... what should "black people" do when faced with an issue of police involvement?

One approach is to have alternate 911... which routes call to "Black designated" resources which are oncall, paid or volunteer... like volunteer ems, to handle their issues. These could be people voted on within such community... pastors, social workers, police... but trusted by them to handle domestic issues and other lower grade issues.

Granted... any situation can be dangerous. They have all the rights of citizens, but the trust of the community at large.

Insults, candidates refusing to shake hands before and after debates, negative advertising out the wazoo. Partisan political talking heads all over the internet

A man in Southport of Rwandan (black/African) heritage committed an atrocity and fatally stabbed 3 young innocent girls.

Now there are riots on all ends of the country with far-rights attacking police, each other, burning buildings with immigrants housed by the government and damaging mosques.

It’s whites fighting whites which doesn’t make sense, there’s also far right people who are uneducated angry at people of colour for taking high paid jobs.

To some fanfare, Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign today launched Republicans for Harris, which will kick off with events this week in the swing states of Arizona, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania. Their goal, campaign officials told Zeke Miller of the Associated Press, is to make it easier for Republican voters put off by Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump to back Democratic presidential nominee Harris. Curiously, though, in their embrace of the nation’s growing democratic coalition, Republicans crossing the aisle in 2024 are returning to their party’s origins.

The Republican Party itself began as a coalition that came together to stand against an oligarchy whose leaders were explicit about their determination to overthrow democracy. As wealth had accumulated in the hands of a small group of elite southern enslavers, those men had turned against American democracy. “I repudiate, as ridiculously absurd, that much-lauded but nowhere accredited dogma of Mr. Jefferson, that ‘all men are created equal,’” South Carolina senator James Henry Hammond said.

When Democrats tried to call those coming together as Republicans “radicals,” rising politician Abraham Lincoln turned the tables by standing firm on the Declaration of Independence. “[Y]ou say you are conservative—eminently conservative—while we are revolutionary, destructive, or something of the sort,” he said, addressing the Democrats who remained determined to base the United States in enslavement.

“What is conservatism? Is it not adherence to the old and tried, against the new and untried? We stick to, contend for, the identical old policy on the point in controversy which was adopted by ‘our fathers who framed the Government under which we live’; while you with one accord…spit upon that old policy, and insist upon substituting something new…. Not one of all your various plans can show a precedent or an advocate in the century within which our Government originated.”
