There's a new trend brewing... modifying traditional literature to be more politically correct.

Several of the most iconic characters in children’s literature, including Augustus Gloop, the Oompa Loompas, and Mrs. Twit, are being described with more inclusive language after publishers made edits to some of author Roald Dahl’s books.

Puffin, the prestigious children’s publisher, and the Roald Dahl Story Company, which Netflix acquired in 2021, worked with sensitivity readers to review Dahl’s texts and give them an update so his stories “can continue to be enjoyed by all today.” The edits generally focus on removing potentially offensive language related to gender, race, weight, mental health, and violence, according to the Independent.

Some of those changes:

* Augustus Gloop from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is now “enormous” and not “fat.”
* In a gender-neutral revision, the Oompa Loompas in that same book are now described as “small people” rather than “small men.”
* In The Witches, where 59 changes were reportedly made by publishers, a line was added to a paragraph that explains why the witches are bald underneath their wigs: “There are plenty of other reasons why women might wear wigs and there is certainly nothing wrong with that.”

These changes sparked a firestorm. Critics unloaded on the edits, accusing them of being clumsy, erasing the author’s intended meaning, and representing political correctness run amok. Acclaimed writer Salman Rushdie tweeted, “Roald Dahl was no angel but this is absurd censorship.”

What do you think? Should literature be updated or left in its original form?

It’s something we made up in order to justify slavery but it really is more of a social construct and we also only classify as white, black or Asian as human races and call everyone else not a human race. In order to explain more on how silly this is… imagine this hypothetical…

If the world was entirely white, we would have called blonde haired people a different race or made distinctions between ourselves based on eye color or some other random human characteristic. We would probably have enslaved brown or blue or green eyed people or something like that.
The green eyed people would hate the blue eyed ones.
Now apply this to skin color. See how silly that is?

Like make it provable. Then we can vote on how to deal with it.

I think it’s ridiculous. They’ll probably get paid for it which is crazy. One of many reasons why women are superior in western society.

Like “terrorism”, drugs, etc. Or abortion. There’s no science that says abortion is a threat to people. Period.

Has the war on drugs actually failed? Isn’t it doing more harm than good at this point?

We have about 6,000 years of history. However, humans have existed for 300,000. So what do you think happened during the other 294,000 years?

Basically the descendants of slave owners because we can’t go after them anymore. They are now all dead.

The way I see it, if you’re not having accidents, you should be allowed to hold onto that 2 or 3k a year.

I’m worried…

All throughout my life, I grew up in predominantly white areas, as I am white myself. Even living outside Atlanta in a suburb, while it was very diverse, there was still a large presence of whites where I lived. This was of course around 15 years ago.

I recently came back to Atlanta to reside here while I undergo a medical procedure, and holy shit, is it a cultural shock! Most places I have been to around here, I am the only white guy or part of a very small handful of white people in the building. I feel very uneasy. It feels foreign and strange.

Recent studies have shown that white people are increasingly becoming a minority in the entire state! In the United States in general, while whites are still the majority, there is a sharp and growing decline.

While I have grown up to think white people are the superior race (and still sort of believe so), I have no hate against people of color. I can befriend a black guy, Hispanic guy, or anyone of another race. I just hate being the minority.
