Would sports be better if the game was in segments?

In baseball, every 3 innings the scores reset and the winner gets one point. So if one team dominates 6 innings in a row the game ends.

In football, every quarter one team gets a point. If it is a tie 2-2 then there is a tiebreaker. If it's 3-0 then the game can end early. Seems way better than the current way things are done.

Why not just make the game time shorter then? Cut the number of innings, or limit football to two 15 minute halves, etc.

Then there is no competition if everyone is going to get a point at the end of each quarter anyways. Why bother putting in any effort when your goals are just going to get scrubbed and instead of 5 points heading into the next quarter, you’re bumped down to 1, with the other team also getting 1?
