Should sports be coed?

I was listening to the radio this morning and they said the school system in my city has a rule that says you must play on a sports team with the gender on your birth certificate.

My first reaction was that's sexist, followed by all sports should be coed. I for one would like to see more women recognized in professional sports. Most of us make a day out of watching college football, superbowl, etc. These are all male dominated games I want to see a woman hold her own against these guys.

However then I thought I wouldn't have played sports if I had to play with guys. I was adequate at basketball. If I was on a team with guys I would've never gotten to play and probably wouldn't have tried.

I think it depends on the sport. You want to have women playing with huge beefcakes out on the field? They'd get DESTROYED.

And that's not meant to offend anybody. But basic biology tells that men are athletically superior to women in particular areas.

That's not to say that a woman wouldn't DESTROY her competition in football – maybe she does. But in general, it's safer, AND you don't have to deal with any relationship dynamics if it's all guys.

And now people will say "but what about gay guys falling in love on the team" but think about it. How often does that happen? Think of an honest answer. Not often at all, I'd say.

Regardless, certain sports should allow for variation of gender, and THAT'S what we should be talking about.

Not an overarching rule of diversity. It just doesn't make sense.

I don't think it's fair because some girls can and want to play football with guys. At the same time a guy may want to play with girls where it's assumed it won't be so rough.

Perhaps instead if guys and girls it should be rough contact sports and less rough no contaCT sports. Your gender shouldn't matter if you can hold your own.

Only some sports, like basketball or baseball. There are already a good number of sports that are co-ed, like wrestling and tennis.

However, sports like football (where you wear huge fucking shoulder pads and helmets and are constantly tackling each other) should NEVER be co-ed. ESPECIALLY on the professional level.

Unless that girl has been a body builder for many years, she will NOT be able to hold her own. Especially if she were to try to join the NFL. She will be hospitalized by her first game. That's not sexism, that's biology. Women on average are noticeably weaker than men. Yes there are exceptions, there are exceptions to everything, but that does not make it any less valid.

If a girl wants to join a football team, and can actually hold her own, then more power to her. She's one of the few exceptions. But just because SHE is able to play football with guys doesn't mean that every other girl can.

I see both sides of the situation. In non contact sports I absolutely agree with you. However for contact sports, I can see why it would be a problem. I feel like for guys they probably wouldn't feel comfortable being as aggressive as they would if they were playing with all guys, and some girls might not be comfortable being as aggressive for certain sports, don't get me wrong though, I do believe that girls can get very agreasive, but just not to the extent of guys.
Also, I do think that there should be more professional women's sports.

depends on the sport. Soccer, baseball, and the like aren't as much physical as they are skill oriented. But football and wrestling, rugby and those kinds of sports need to be separated by gender.

Wrong, males will always be better at those respective sports. Men are quicker and have more strength. Women could never throw a 95 mph fastball

I advocate sports to go pro with women. But not mixing both genders together.

There must be a few sports around where the male physique would not give a strength advantage - I have heard of female kickers in college American football but I often wonder why we don't see more women at the top in things like darts, pool, bowling, chess etc.

Are you kidding me? We don't just divide sports down by sex, but in some sports by weigh bracket, too.

When we race cars, we don't put a PT Cruiser up against Indy cars (much as I'd love to see more stock cars recognized in racing).

Our sexual dimorphism puts men and women in different classes when it comes to games with limited physical expression (like ball games).

The fact is women sports aren't as popular as male. If they were exciting, more people would watch it. For example, the WNBA is just as popular as the NBA. It just doesn't sell. Until the profit goes up for women sports, they won't become popular.

The law you're referring to isn't about co-ed sports, it's about keeping transgender kids from playing on sports teams. Pretty sad.

Nobody should have to do sports. But yeah they should be coed, and at my school they were. It's just friendly games, it's not like playing professionally or anything
