I know the goalkeepers can use their hands during open play but why can’t the other players?
If you read about the history of football you will see that the first purpose of the game whas by any way to send a ball in to a diferent village (by running, hiting the ball whit hand or foot, pasing to a friend whit a hand or leg, no rules, exept to kill).
In future this kinde of brutal version of sport evolve in 2 direction, one is the football where you are allow to play only whit your legs and head and the other one is rugby where you can still use both hands and legs but it's better to use your hands because of the shape of the ball and its impredictibility direction afther you hit it whit legs.
So that brutal version simply separate in 2 games, one whit hands and one whit legs.

Its just the same as you can't smash other players with the baseball in baseball.
so its a bit more of challenge lasts a bit longer and not as easy as hands it would be easy with hand because the movment in your feet is diffrent if u are trying to win a goal wuth yoir hands you can be slow to concentait with legs the balls can jump about everywhere giving someone else in the othe team get a chance to win i would say thats why
It's called football to emphasize the fact you don't use your hands.

Soccer as Americans call it is Football in most countries, the name explains it all, Soccer its a foul for a player to touch the ball with hands and is kinda cheating comsidering you can't rugby tackle.
In Gaelic rules soccer/football you can use your hands.
