What Does Holding Hands Signify?

I really like this girl I'm dating. One night, while sitting next to her and watching TV, I placed my hand on hers. She immediately grabbed it and smiled. It was the most powerful and romantic feeling ever. I've done way more than this but have never felt the same way.

I've been single for a long time and the holding hands gesture feels almost new to me. Does this mean we're in now a relationship? Or is this a just friends kind of thing?

Appreciate the feedback. As an update, she and I have been dating. I've asked her out like 5 times already. We never made it clear where we were in our friendship. But this one night, I was super nervous. It took me forever to do it, but I finally reached over, brushed the top of my hand against hers and she took it.

I don't know. I don't really enjoy holding hands that much, but I like what it symbolizes. It's like you're claiming ownership of and acknowleging the relationship. like a public display that you're an item. alone I guess it's just a subtle romantic gesture? I'm guessing she doesn't get around much? lol. But yea I would say holding hands is definitely not a friends thing, its more romantic than that. but yea you're not really dating or in a relationship until you clearly talk that over with her and she agrees.

No, you're not in a relationship till you have the "are we in a relationship" talk, but you're experiencing the "chemistry" of the relationship when you take her hand. Only you and she can determine of that chemistry will be filtered as "friendship" or "romance"...it's all about you and your neurons, babe.

I would take it she definitely likes you and feels comfortable with you which again is a good thing, I suspect kissing is going to be on the horizon for you soon. Good for you by the way :-)

You have to make it official by asking her to be your girlfriend. then yes, you are in a relationship, update your status and all that, lol. Good luck!

i think it means she's interested. but until you make it official (eg ask her out), it means no more. I wouldn't do that with a guy friend. if he was only a friend. but this is how my last relationship started. with the butterflies-in-your-stomach hand holding.

This gesture is somehow misunderstood by many people. It is thought that holding hands means that they are starting a boyfriend/girlfriend relationship or that they are dating and are in a romantical relationship, but this could be wrong.

This gesture is like the hugs, which you give normally to show affection and secure to the receiver (family, friends, bf/gf, co-workers maybe, etc).

What I think it really matters is not to take this kind of gestures seriously, as long as both of you don't make clear which relationship level are both of you really having, this gestures would mean many other things.

Thank you for your input. It's interesting. But I feel that holding hands is a very powerful and romantic gesture. It demonstrates a sense of possession and willingness to walk through life together side by side. I feel it's an action that conveys an important step in a relationship.

Noooo...I'd NEVER hold my male friends hand no matter how close we were. Holding hands is like a very close connection without getting too close if you know what I mean. Its more or less the nature in the hand holding. When you have interlocking fingers while holding hands that's when I think its official.

IMO it's a gateway to being in a relationship. Holding hands with someone does not mean you're boyfriend-girlfriend but it means you want to move away from being just friends. Hope this helps!

I think holding hands means she likes you more than friends. Now, it apparently doesn't mean she wants to be your girlfriend. I had a girl do that and much more just to find out she "didn't want a relationship". But that could of just been me lol
