The Olympic games started a few days ago. Are you following the games? Do you find it interesting? How is your country doing?

I personally enjoy watching the games, especially when there is a sport I like, such as gymnastics and volleyball, but I really like to watch the Olympic games because of the importance that this event has.

The Olympic games have a very ancient and important history. The creation of the Olympic Games was inspired by the ancient Olympic, which were held in Olympia, from the 8th century BC to the 4th century AD. It is fascinating for me to think about how long the history of this event is.

This year, there are more than 5000 medals waiting to be awarded and a lot of deserving athletes.

50 years ago, the Olympics were relevant. Now, not so much and this is partly because there are WAY to many "sports" now. It's ridiculous.

They ought to split the Olympics into 4 from 2, with some form of Olympics held every year, but the Olympics for any particular sport are still held every 4 years.
So, like...

Year_1: Summer Olympics I [outdoor events]
Football, track and field, baseball/softball...

Year_2 (the next year): Winter Olympics I [indoor events]
Ice hockey, figure skating, curling, speed skating

Year_3 (the next year): Summer Olympics II [indoor events]
Gymnastics, basketball, handball, cycling, volleyball, water sports involving a pool.

Year_4 (the next year): Winter Olympics II [outdoor events]
Skiing events, biathlon, sledding events...

Year_5 (the next year): Summer Olympics I
etc

By doing this, there are several advantages:
1. The Olympics in some form are held every year and this is good for diplomacy reasons.
2. The costs for the host city/nation are lower because they only have to concentrate on either outdoor or indoor facilities.
3. Some cities/nations are simply better for outdoor sports than others. So cities/nations that would have an extra burden to accommodate outdoor sports could be excluded from the list of potential Olympic sites for outdoor sports, but still be on the list of potential Olympic sites for indoor sports.
4. It would be easier to have more cities/nations be potential host sites since the costs will be lowered. Africa could host an Olympics.
5. Broadcast networks would save money too because they do not need to cover so much and they can cover what they wish more deeply.

There are simply many more Olympic sports now. This is a big difference between Olympics in, say, 1972, than the Olympics in 2024. Just compare the lists of sports and you will see a considerable difference. Having all these sports concentrated in just one summer and one winter Olympics is too burdensome for everyone, but splitting them up is a win-win for everyone.

1972 Summer Olympics featured 195 events in 21 sports.
2024 Summer Olympics featured 329 events in 32 sports.

1972 Winter Olympics featured 35 events in 10 sports.
2022 Winter Olympics featured 109 events over 15 disciplines in 7 sports.

So, as it stands, I really don't give a shit anymore.

I do not watch Sports in general... but I do find Sports, and Sport Competitions, very important.

The Olympics, as you have pointed out, has a very long and rich history... but also at times a dark history.

Despite there being a lot of rivalry between certain countries in the world, it does bring those countries together; even it is for the sole duration of the competition, in my opinion this is very good (Think about both Koreas jointly competing; sadly that has come to an end)

It makes me angry that 'Politics' is finding its way more and more into Sports; it has no place in Sports. Athletes of all nations should be able to compete regardless of what their countries international reputation is and they should be able to display their pride in competing for their countries. The banning of National Flags and Anthems is unfair.

I do, however, support that Athletes can refuse to compete against Athletes of countries if they choose to do so. The reason for this is simple; the Athlete who refuses, regardless of on which grounds, forfeits competing and thus loses. That's of course a very fair ruling, and Athletes who do choose to refuse to compete are fully aware of this and accept the consequences of their decision.

Yes, it's an opportunity for youth from every nation to represent their country in a peaceful athletic competition. I love the many positive values the games support, though I don't like what a circus the media has made things this year -- it should be a FREE PROGRAM. It's hard to express our national pride in the young champions when media moguls restrict viewing to paid subscriptions.

I have always enjoyed the Olympics. The US just passed 3,000 medals won in our Olympic history. We will have the most medals won this year and will very likely have the most gold medals won.

But I like watching all the countries and the spirit of the Olympics which is coming together through sports. I am marveled by the efforts of all of the athletes, no matter the country. Our aTV announcers are not biased and speak well of many olympians and their efforts.

Our announcers do celebrate the US wins and even Great Britain at times. Italy did very well in gymnastics, swimming and some other sports so you should be happy.

The Olympics have been around all my life, I have never cared and I'm a high sports fan but the Olympics are not professional sports. So to me it's like high school sports... my kid ain't playing so he'll with it. I mean besides it's so boring... and I don't need the Olympics if I want politics, vi got mainstream media for that. I'm having to watch it as other people who share the house watch it. Sighs. I don't like the Olympics much, after all - it's a little, uncomfortable at times with so much - flag waving. Constant patriotism of so many makes me feel like - can't we all just get along without contact sports

If people genuinely supported these sports they should watch them each week rather than for 2 weeks every 4 years. People complain that the participants don’t get paid well but they they don’t support them with their money by paying to see them participate every week.
