Are Americans actually excited about the World Cup like the rest of us?

Im aware football/ soccer isn't as popular of a sport over in the US as it is for the rest of the world.

Football is seen as more of a woman's sport in the US from what I've seen correct me if im wrong.

As The US is hosting this year I wondered if actual Americans are watching and excited over it.

I imagine its quite a culture shock with a sport that is not as popular over there and the politics that come with it.

As i brit i wonder how Americans are taking to the football hooligans 🤣 every country has rowdy fans but the British are a special breed. Im already loving the memes and funny videos being shown on social media.

Especially the Americans vs England football chants. Lol we aren't all posh and proper 🤣

I know with a lot of American sports the supermarkets and big companies go crazy selling merch and stuff. I wonder if there's a lot of world cup merch in the shops over there?

I don't think I'd phrase it that it's seen as a women's sport. It's that the American women happen to be far more successful than the men are. If the men had a realistic chance of winning, people would go berserk too. The most watched soccer game ever in America was a women's game because it was the World Cup final. If the men got even close to it, they'd break the record easily.

But excitement for the group stage and such isn't going to compare to the rest of the world. 23 million people in Germany watched Germany play Curacao and 17 million in America watch the US men's first game... and that was a record. There just isn't enough interest in the sport itself during the group stage for people to care. If America made it to the last eight teams, the country would become crazed over it. Not really for the sport though, just for the prospect of winning.

I should be but I am not. The NBA and and NHL seasons just ended so a lot of us were focused on the championships in those leagues going on the previous two weeks. Also, we are in the middle of baseball season near the mid-season so things are getting heated. And now, the WNBA season is going on and believe it or not there are quite a few Americans who do care about women's basketball, so we follow it.

I think it will help increase the popularity of the sport. Not sure if I would say there is great excitement. Maybe if the US team does well there might be more.

A lot of Americans are genuinely excited, just not on the same all‑consuming level you see in England. 🇺🇸⚽

In big cities and college towns, bars are packed, fan zones are full, and younger fans especially are really into it. Soccer has grown fast here through MLS, Premier League on TV, and youth leagues.

Hooligan culture is more of a curiosity than a norm. Most US fans are loud, playful, and meme‑obsessed, but far less aggressive. The chants battle with England has been hilarious to watch. 😄
