How far can the USMNT realistically go in this World Cup?

They are looking better than ever to me. Do you think they can get past the round of 16 this year?

I realize Australia is mediocre, but the USA totally dominated time of possession. They seem to be fitter than the other teams so far: Able to just run them to death I guess.

There are far more skilled teams. I play soccer at a collegiate level. They are much improved but not a contender.

@FrodoSkywalker007 Probably not, because other countries best athletes play Soccer. In the USA, our best athletes play corner or wide receiver in American Football. So our soccer players are like our 3rd or 4th best pool of athletes among all American sports, while our best athletes play American Football.

I played Soccer one year in High School (5A,) but it was our school's first year of having a Soccer team, and we got destroyed by St. Pauls and St. Thomas Aquinas, because they recruit players from the Honduras to play Soccer. Our Varsity team got beat 16-1 by St. Pauls and they didn't even play their starters in the second half. Talk about embarrassing. We ended 3rd in the division even after getting stomped that bad by the number 1 team.

There's some pretty bad teams going into the round of 32 simply because everyone keeps "playing for a draw". Most of the games have been boring as hell to watch. I think the USA has done better than most teams. I'm not saying they can actually beat Argentina, Spain, or Portugal, but at least they know how to score goals, which I thought that was the point of the game.

Realistically, quarterfinals feels like the ceiling this time. Getting out of the group and winning a round of 16 match is absolutely possible. Once you hit the last eight, the talent gap and big-game experience of elite teams usually starts to tell.
