i think that would make the "national" aspect of the sport way more plausibe. otherwise it's merely about what country can afford the best players.

No, because say someone was born in Germany but moved to the US when they were a child. Why should they play for Germany?

There's already a rule that they have to be living in the country for 5 years

The 5 year rule applies only to countries you have no ties to so you can be made a citizen last month based on a grandparent having come from there. Bonny for the Ivory Coast just happened in May. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s never been there.

It doesn’t really matter because they all have Moroccan parents anyway. Also many of them were born in Spain and in Spain they are often seen as more Moroccan than Spanish.
