According to a Downing Street spokesman, The Prime Minister is hoping everyone should get behind the England team as we face Argentina tomorrow. The Prime Minister would very much encourage unity and very much urge everybody to support England."
Oh dear, he's upset people again. Despite Argentina being the last country we had a war with and is still considered a military threat, it seems many in Scotland and Wales are following the old "anyone but England" rule. Sales of Argentina shirts have soared in Scotland and various people have received local backlash on social media after wishing good luck on social media
So thoughts, if you're from Scotland, Wales, or Ireland, are you wishing England good luck? Americans I know you don't give a toss so let's hear an unbiased opinion.
Should the other British countries support England in the World Cup?
Meanwhile I am an American of Latin American descent, so I’d have more in common with Argentina seeing as how I usually wouldn’t want a European team to win in the Americas… but this time I’m going with England. Argentina and its fans have been pretty controversial and annoying the past few years, especially in this World Cup. Besides they’ve already been world champions for 4 years… almost a decade of Argentinian sh*t talking? No thanks!
I’d rather England have a chance at the final after so many years. Plus I like Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham.
I honestly thought France would win. Now I'm not really sure who I want to support. If Spain had a decent attack I'd support them but they have not been fun to watch in my opinion. Argentina won last time and this whole ref controversy is not really helping. I am glad Messi won the world cup but now he's 39 and I didn't expect him to be contending for it again. I feel like it would do more harm than good to his legacy if he won again but it was in a way where there were doubts about the legitimacy. England it's fun when they don't win that is true. As I said Spain is kind of the natural choice but I just hate how they've played. Oyarzabal looks so ass, Yamal gets double teamed and I don't know they just look kind of elost most of the time in attack. Yamal running like the wind just to be in the right spot to get kicked by the defender in the box who wanted to play the ball. That is some bullshit. I don't know I'll tell you who I support when the final actually happens.
As a guy who supports an NFL team 1000 miles away from here I can get behind the rebellious attitude of those Argentina kit buyers. Personally though, England lost to Argentina some 40 years ago in the Maradona "hand of god". Then there's the fact that some folk are referring to "that other team" as VARgentina after what many regard as fishy circumstances in their last couple victories. Bit of controversy in England's win over Norway as well... apparently by the breadth of a camera support cable? I'll support England as the last time they won was 1966 (I like underdogs). Argentina won just last time so...
I think England are the slight favorites against Argentina because Argentina have the oldest team in the World Cup.
If England meet Spain in the final I would put my money on England, because they will have better odds, with the English team full of European competition winners, with Spain not even making the Champions League Final, and England did with Arsenal.
I actually thought France would dispatch Spain yesterday. Seems the problem is scoring even one goal on them... one goal for the whole tournament I think? Pretty formidable. I'd love to see England win it.
I'm Irish and I'm supporting England 🤷♀️ I was also supporting Scotland while they were still in
I think the anti-English tribalism a lot of people in Scotland/Wales/Ireland still try to push is incredibly outdated and unhelpful, it does no one any good (and in Scotland especially it's built on incredibly flimsy foundations, the empire was as much their doing as the English)
@Levin I'll happily take the compliment but I know a large amount of my countrymen would likewise side against English because of petty tribalism lolol
Did you know there are probably more people from Wales, Scotland, and Ireland living in England than in their own countries because of ancestry.
Even England is smaller than States in the US, with Wales, Scotland, and Ireland combined being smaller than England, and are all insignificant on the world stage on their own without the UK.
So I would suggest waving the English flags with pride if they can overcome Argentina and Spain.
I really don't care. Spain has been my pick all along, and should defeat either Argentina or England. Sorry, Lionel Messi and Harry Kane. 2026 is not your year.
Asking a Scot to root for England is like asking a Georgia Tech alumnus to root for the University of Georgia (American) football team. Sacriligeous.
We Americans thought Keith Starmer had more important things to do, like hire the moving van.
No it's sort of like the rule of football that England must always be the bridesmaid, never the bride.
Give England a bit of success and it goes to their head. They STILL talk about 66 like no one won it since.

No Celtic country would ever support Anglo-Saxon invaders. We know what they did to us in the past.

Would the Mayans support Spain in the World Cup, after all things the conquistadors did to them in the past? I don't think so.

I see that some people in here are traitors to Celtic nations, but doesn't matter, I don't consider them Celtic anyway... their ancestors were obviously assimilated/anglicized.
Yes I am supporting England. I’m tired of Argentina. They won the World Cup last time. I like Leo Messi he plays for Miami in the MLS league But like I said they won Argentina 4 years ago. England hasn’t won since 1966 A World Cup so I will support them. and I suggest that you do the same as well. And by the way the game is not tomorrow it’s today at 3 o’clock my time in Miami Florida the game is being played in Atlanta, Georgia USA 🇺🇸
England should ask itself why they aren’t supported. How do they fix that as it is bigger than just a game. It is time to make amends and heal the nation perhaps. I don’t know what the issue is but I can image coming from an Irish Catholic background even though from the US.
I'm an Irish Catholic and I think the anti-English tribalism a lot of people in Scotland/Wales/Ireland still try to push is incredibly outdated and unhelpful, it does no one any good (and in Scotland especially it's built on incredibly flimsy foundations, the empire was as much their doing as the English)
At some point we've gotta let shit go and move on 🤷♀️
Maybe it’s just a sports rivalry. For example Uruguayans are very close geographically and culturally to Argentina, but they have a football rivalry with them so they often support the team Argentina is playing against.
In the case of England and other British countries, it may be the loud English fans which many think to be some of the most annoying fans in sports 😂
@JennaWillow I go back and forth in this. I liked the Queen even though I know they starved so many people and my family was forced to leave I am guessing. It is almost still in living memory. It wasn’t that long ago in historical terms. I will likely cheer for them since Argentina seems to be getting too many favorable calls from the Refs.
@Jersey2 Yeah that's fair, I've just grown up hearing a lot of people ramble on about it because it's just the done thing, despite the fact everyone culpable is long dead. It also wasn't a purely Irish phenomenon, the potato failure of the 1840s occured throughout all of Western Europe, it was just Ireland that got hit the worst given how overreliant on the crop we were - the English could have done a lot more to mitigate the problem once it arose, but they didn't cause it any more than the Dutch did which is where the blight started
I don't think it's fair to tar a country of 50 million living people with the same brush as a handful of dead politicians almost 200 years ago, but people keep picking at the scab 😞 sorry for the text dump lolol
@JennaWillow But the food that was grown then, was sent to other countries because they could get more money so the people starved in Ireland. I guess you didn’t know that part.
Argentina is getting a bit repetitive but so is Europe dominating. I'll wait and see how the parts of the game I can stay awake for go. If the winner gets the Falklands, I'll root for England.
P. S. can someone explain to me why Scotland has a different team? And Curacao? They're not really different countries. I meant to research that a few weeks ago when it started.
Scotland is considered a different country. It's complex but England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland are considered separate countries however the UN only recognise them combined as the UK. It's like quantum physics with countries
Scotland, Wales etc, just instinctually bother me...
However, it's surprising to see some general support for England. Most people hate England and see us as not having a hope in hell of winning anything.
I live in Canada. Part of the Commonwealth... yet I am cheering for Spain. I want to see Trump hand over the trophy to the Spanish team after all he has said about Spain... total Karma.
I was hoping England would win but didn't see enough of their potential put into action and the unfortunate hand of god acted again. Argentina aren't that good either tbh
It's usually the losing side that holds a grudge. The British think of Argentina as tango, Messi, and all that nice stuff, but ask Argentinians the same question and they'll just insult you.
I think this is true. It’s because many Argentinians lost a family member during the war and it wasn’t that long ago. For the UK the Falklands may just be an overseas territory, for Argentina the Malvinas represent many lives lost.

See, Irish people are sound.
Northern Irish, Scottish and Welsh, not so much.
@Levin I'll happily take the compliment but I know a large amount of my countrymen would likewise side against English because of petty tribalism lolol
Well anyway we fucked it up.

@choco-latte It could be for most.

I kind of get it, man.
Scotland, Wales etc, just instinctually bother me...
However, it's surprising to see some general support for England. Most people hate England and see us as not having a hope in hell of winning anything.
It's not necessary.
Rifts can exist in athletics and sports.
This is an example of moments in time when the "United Kingdom" isn't united.
I live in Canada. Part of the Commonwealth... yet I am cheering for Spain. I want to see Trump hand over the trophy to the Spanish team after all he has said about Spain... total Karma.

Why you going to cry about being a loser after you insulted everyone else. Do you need a tissue?
The last countries britain had a war with is syria, libyia and iraq.
Argentinan government is sabre rattling again to cover up economic problems
It's usually the losing side that holds a grudge. The British think of Argentina as tango, Messi, and all that nice stuff, but ask Argentinians the same question and they'll just insult you.

There is an "anyone but England" notion in the UK? Dear god, that's embarrassing.
Never forgive never forget. Especially Scots and Irish shouldn't forget that
I should show some Commonwealth solidarity but it is soccer so I won't.
Nah, just don't watch the shite tonight
Side with the Spanish/French against us in the final as old enemies of England
I’m American and I’m sad to hear England lost
England players are a bunch of cry babies and fall over on purpose.
They're a joke to watch
too late, they already lost.
They hate us because they ain't us.
I'm sure most of them will support England
I did.
No..
Yeah
