Sure you can. You were duped into believing it is to your benefit. Brits could always get social security benefits in any EU country. Their dear Indians and Africans are too numerous for the EU to keep feeding and housing them. Your problems with immigrants were never with EU citizens but with your commonwealth/commonpoorians - there are a few billion of those, vs 500 million relatively well off EU nationals.

no actually, from what i heard from people and the media, the problem was specifically european immigrants because to come from another country you had to have a visa and whatnot but it was believed that europeans had open access to the uk

Yeah, right. Maybe fake Romanian or similar passports. They looled for the 'golden life' the UK actively advertised, presenting itself as an economic super-power that welcomes all and can employ them productively. No EU country would shove that kind of propaganda at the kinds of appalingly corrupt people you kept accepting. Anyway, you get to see whether that was the case now. Can tell tou Germans went into shock you dumped them alone onto France/latin cultures.
All of EU made a mistake in signing the 1996 Barcelona agreement with Maghreb/North African and mediterranean countries to give them promises of them becoming European. They are not, and wouldn't want to be.

It's a question, that. British had quite a leading role in Brussels. That the EU frameworks and ways of doing/thinking/going are complex, even bureaucratic at times is no secret. It can seem daunting and is time consuming - but most of their regulation is very sensible and consumer protecting in the end (that 'European quality' thing).
If the UK can find a comfortable position towards Ireland, it will always be welcome in Brussels.
What Brussels expects is participation, to represent own interests but to not get greedy or aggravational. It is all of Europe there, save for Russia/Ukraina/Belarus/Georgia/Armenia.
