Economically, probably not. But there are a complex array of factors at work, including how badly things have been managed by the powers that be. The UK has been pretty much a failed state way before leaving the EU. Growth has not been particularly convincing since the financial crash of 2008. The idea of leaving was to take back soveignty and control borders. To deal a hammer blow to this whole pet project of globalism, which is undermining national identity and ultimately trying to make every country an indiscrete economic zone, with a 'diverse' array of people who form their own communities and don't integrate. Inwardly tense and warring lot are far easier to control. The UK has gone from a safe, high trust society, to the exact opposite, in the space of the last 15 years. Outside of the snooty academic bubble, people could see which way the wind was blowing.
Immigration has been wild and out of control. Now London is 36% white British as of 2021 (a year after the UK formally left the EU). It is 53% white. The second largest city, Birmingham is now majority non white. People want to preserve their culture. Pretty much every government we have had in the last 20 years has been elected on a mandate on low and controlled immigation. Remember David Cameron's figure of it should be less than 100000 per year net? What have we had? In 2023 net migration has been 1 million. We have been let down by our treachourous leaders. After leaving the EU the government has doubled down on these disastrous policies.
Cheap labour has been used to paper over the cracks in Britain's economy (Although I do believe there are more nefarious and ideological forces at work). We are supposed to live in a democracy and election after election, the will of the people has been ignored.
What this country needs is to stimulate business with deregulation, cutting red tape and taxes. Have a critical and thinking look over this green agenda, which forces garbage technology with dubious green claims (such as electric vehicles) on the population. You know something is good for you when it has to be forced on you, don't you? We have the most expensive business energy in the world. Stop policing twitter and actually focus on criminals. Have net zero migration. Ban cousin marrying. Insist people who come here *integrate*. There is no such thing as multiculturalism, it has been the most dismal failure. We have *British culture*. If you come here you must integrate and respect the culture. Leave the ECHR. Any economic migrant who comes here via boat crossing (most of them are economic migrants as far as I'm concerned) must be promptly deported. That will stop them coming in one fell swoop. Benefits must be based on paying in, and must taper off gradually to stop dependency.
People in this country are too fat and dependent on the state. They have been lazy and unconscious with shit food and media. I'll sort them out, good and proper I will.
That's interesting you say that, because from what I see it seems like most British people support migrants and minorities and elect leaders that do so.
This is probably gonna get me in trouble, but it's disgraceful that a Muslim managed to become mayor of London.
Just out of curiosity, what would you define as "British culture"?
I was watching a documentary with my mom and they showed the largest Hindu temple outside of India, and Hindus baking cakes and leaving a shit ton of food for their gods. Food that could have been used to feed hungry people.
She said the UK should have never allowed this.
She said it's disgraceful that you guys have the largest Hindu temple outside of India.
People should keep THEIR culture in THEIR country. But they want to have their cake and eat it too.
@KostasKouvalis Historically maybe, but I think only the dumbest haven't woken up by now. Things have gotten a lot harder economically in the past 4 years. Surely people are starting to see. Usually the university classes and London bubble that are completely divorced from reality, or having to live with the real world consequences of 'diversity'. And yes, that man is abhorrent, and I can't fathom why anyone would vote for him. Some things are not supposed to be understood I guess. But that man is truly repellent and inwardly despises British culture.
I mean, I can't give a brilliant definition, but obviously it's our values and way of being that has descended from our ancestors. It is western liberalism (in the old sense of the word), it is individual liberty, a sense of fair play. Queuing. A sense of humour. Our, now long gone, high trust society. Being able to laugh at ourselves. Having the best humour, the best music, pound for pound, in the world. Our inventiveness, our contributions to science, philosophy, every conceivable field.
As far as I can tell, Hindus, for the most part, respect the culture and don't secretly want to destroy it. You know which particular group I am referring to, who don't.
@KostasKouvalis Xenophobic much, big boy?
@beefcakebradybatson Not all xenos, only some. And it's more of an irritance than a phobia
@KostasKouvalis Why? Because he's brown, not white? Were you alive Mar.7,1965 and in Selma, Ala. for "Bloody Sunday on the Edmund Pettus Bridge" when peaceful, well-dressed church-going Voting Rights activists were set upon by inbred goobers posing as "Deputies" under the equally swinish Dallas Country, Ala. Sheriff Jim Clark while trying to march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama's capital, you'd have rooted for the pigs to continue fire hosing and beating the heroic demonstrators while calling then the "N" word.
Nope. Not even close. Putting aside the political chaos, which to this day is still not over. They have had an insane amount of regulatory issues such as coming to an agreement on how to trade with the EU after.
It has gotten so bad that unless something has changed recently then the UK is incapable of performing border checks which means that anyone can just drive over the border with a truck filled with illegal goods and none would be the wiser. As such there has been an influx of expired or dangerous foods being dumped in the UK market with predictable results, not to talk about things like drugs and other illegal guns.
And did you remember what I said just a bit ago? The UK has had problems coming to agreements on how trade is supposed to be performed with the EU. In other words, many businesses can't import or export anymore because they dont know what paperwork to sign or where to submit it.
The vote to leave the EU was 8 years ago. The UK has still not been able to fully implement the separation and still have a bunch of temporary agreements which only was supposed to exist until the UK could get back on their feet. The reason these connections still persist is because the UK can't sustain the disruption if these things were to be actually separated.
Economically, socially, legally, whatever... It has been an epic disaster on literally every front and has showcased that the people who pushed for Brexit in the first place had no idea what they were doing or otherwise did not care about the state of the UK after the fact.
At the end of the day I think it is very telling that the prime minister that put Brexit up for a vote, thinking that it would easily get crushed after looking at the polls, immediately resigned after Brexit actually won. He knew that the UK was screwed at that point and that staying in power to try implement Brexit was a lost cause. He took his money and fucking ran for the hills.
Covid conveniently popped up as we left, giving the government something to pin the blame on. Price rises and shortages weren't Brexits' fault or theirs it was covid. Now it's Russia to blame. Import issues, it's striking Frenchies and people being awkward. The thing is higher costs just became the new norm, we renamed it "the cost of living" crisis rather than "the brexit fuck up."
The problem is so much time has passed since it's hard to know whether to pin the country's problems on Brexit or government incompetence. The government and right wing can easily cherry pick stats to show where things have alledgely improved, but linking that improvement to Brexit is a different matter. This year's been abysmal for many farmers due to bad weather, I'll guarantee next year if the weather's nicer we'll see headlines like "productivity up 600% thanks to Brexit"
As for immigration we've lost a lot of skilled workers, I personally know of two vets who left because they no longer felt safe. Unsurprisingly the illegal immigrants keep coming and aren't deterred. The good thing is now it's really easy for guys to get a haircut because 90% of our highest street shops are now Turkish barbers.
Jobs left by immigrants like retail work have mostly been filled by students or retired people topping up their pension, few if any have been taken by those who yelled "immigrants are taking OUR Jobs" mostly because employers see these people as unemployable.
Forgot to mention, our illegal immigration problem is entirely the fault of the French.
@purplepoppy has a point, though. France and Germany still haven't found any efficient methods to stop illegals from patching together their makeshift boats every other day. In the end, the UK will have to enforce some strict immigration regime like Australia.
Chum the waters, let the sharks solve the problem. Seriously though the English Channel has a lot of boat traffic, given the attitudes of some brits I wouldn't be surprised to learn dinghies get slashed and sunk.
I have read that in some counties (not sure if DE or FR) authorities have outright banned the sales of boats, kayaks, dinghies... I doubt that will have a large impact, though.
How was it the fault of the French? It was Angela Merkel who let them in. Also, it's not the responsibility of the French to secure Britain's boarders. It's Britain's responsibility. When France was having a problem, they stopped all trains coming in from Italy.
Also, didn't you recently make a post about deporting illegal Americans from Europe as a jab at Trump's immigration policy, yet now you seem to be complaining about migrants in your own country.
Britain knows it fucked up, now it wants to make the migrants Rwanda's problems.
THAT being said, I personally prefer the idea of just shooting them up with machine guns, but that might just be my Americaness talking.
Actually at least 2 politicians have suggested mowing them down with machine guns. If France stopped selling them dinghies they couldn't cross. But the reality is if we want to stop migrants we have to have a joined up European policy that concentrates efforts on points of entry in South Europe
my goodness we have some serious problems with muslim countries... bloody heck! buggah!!

As an American - no idea LOL. But I am fascinated by the issue - from the outside looking in it seems that BREXIT with a special trade deal with the US could have worked, but they didn't get one. I think its much ado about nothing. At the end of the day, EU must work with the Brits and vice versa.

I have read recently that UK GDP has exceeded France's GDP and will exceed Germany's GDP by 2038. It implies UK is doing better than France and Germany post Brexit and gained on both. However Germany has been forced to forgo Russian gas - a key reason of it's industrial success and the it's population is aging so multiple factors.
Not a simple dynamic of UK doing better means it was better out of EU.
"UK economy had zero growth between July and September"

it was always known... by actual economists, that the UK was going to lose as much as 300 billion dollars in the next decade... and every major indicator those point out for that to be the case, so yeah...
politicians sold ideals to people... but economists never did
maybe they're doing better in other areas?
also, last I heard... Manchester City is not doing well at all, lmao
Are we talking about the same UK that suddenly has empty supermarkets, dry petrol stations and an NHS on the brink of collapse because they got rid of their foreign workers? Yeah, that whole Brexit thing has worked out really well for them...
They have no local people that are qualified for those jobs?
The same situation that no US-American wants to pick strawberries for five quid an hour, I suppose? I have a German acquaintance residing in the UK who was invited to try for truck driving school. And apparently these letters went out to thousands of people.
If someone offered me to pick strawberries right now, I would.
I do find it funny that we've imported the best part of 10 million 'doctors and engineers' in the past 20 years, including 1 million net in 2023. But there is still not enough labour, and we still need to import more. I guess 'doctors and engineers' wouldn't want to work in the fruit picking sector?
The problem with farm jobs is unless your very local you've often got a very long commute for minimum wage. People get pissed off at the idea of low paid labour while their mate gets more sitting on a supermarket checkout five minutes away. As for the NHS, I don't know about England but Wales pays relocation costs for Indian doctors to settle here, I think about a third of our doctors are Indian.
@purplepoppy Normally you have some grotty caravans that poles can work from, don't you?
That's the point. No one wants to live in a grotty caravan with 12 other guys for a minimum wage job. You'll hear farmers moan they can't get British workers but its just not realistic to expect people to take these jobs.
I think it was always simplistic to assume a positive economic outcome , the entire thing should not have happened , and it would not have had it been handled better by Cameron.
Certainly worse off , that was a given.
The United Kingdom was wise to leave. The European Union is eventually going to dissolve. Countries like France and Germany can't be expected to endlessly support the financial debt of the Mediterranean countries.
Lol no. Another Putin manufactured crisis and arrogant western pols played the parts of motley fluffers well.
Doubt it. The whole campaign was built on lies and false promises.
I wish they left this website, along with the dry Germans.
Not as bad because there really hasn't been much of a brexit. They can't figure out how to do it. Lol
Better to ask the Brits. I know several and they have different views about Brexit.
The U. K. economy tanked because of Brexit !!!
Europe is going to hell, escorted by Saracens.
It was difficult initially but u would never know the difference now
It could be better if they got rid of the woksters.
No, its worse. but that is no surprise.
No, it's much much worse.
No. Significantly worse in many ways.
That is a matter for the British.
I think no it was not a good idea for UK
Far better with the Nazi jackboot off our throats
