Is the UK just completely screwed?

I'm not saying this one stat means everything but it's bad. China and India have mitigating factors in my opinion but the UK doesn't and can't afford to lose these tax payers.

Either you can run your country as very business friendly and low taxes to attract rich people and capable people who wanna start businesses or move to your country to work. This might lead to a bigger gap between rich and poor because the laws are written for rich people but your country will have a thriving economy and more money will be flowing more taxes for the government and this rising tide will benefit also poor people in a small way. This is the American approach.

Or you can be less friendly to rich people with your tax laws and try and focus more on public services like education, health care, wellfare, infrastructure and keep the living standards high even for those who are struggling. This will also create a certain quality of life. People like to be in a place where everyone is doing pretty well nobody is openly suffering in the streets homeless. It creates an optimism and trust in the government and the country. Many rich european countries do this or some can even do both attract rich people and also care for the less fortunate which is great.

But the UK seems to have the worst of all worlds poor people are suffering and rich people don't want to be there either and because of Brexit a lot of businesses have also left or stopped investing. The public services are almost collapsing. Nothing's going well the public services cost to much and are inefficient and when they get privatized it's just a way to steal money from the public and it's corruption and the service still sucks. That's at least the impression I'm getting from the outside.

I don't understand why the united kingdom has soo much goverment. Privatize your healthcare industry, privatize everything.

The goverment is for forign policy and unfortunately police. You try to put its leaders in charge of everything they don't have to be accountable for anything.

The United Kingdom has been going downhill since world war 2. Most likely because it vastly expanded the responsibility for which your politicians were elected with NIH.

Everything has since then been incompetently mismanaged and declined.

The UK didn't suddenly become poor. 20 years ago they were between Mississippi and Alabama and they are still there. The United Kingdom has been getting poorer and poorer for 80+ years because of distracted and incompetent leadership

The same leadership which threw away every life line given to them in 6+ years diddling around doing nothing. While your industries starved.

They have privatized a lot of things but that has been a disaster too. They privatized water companies and now they're spilling untreated sewage into rivers. They privatized railways and the service is shit. It feels like either way money gets stolen from the tax payers. There's a lot of countries in Europe that can do public services well and England used to be able to as well but now things have just gone downhill.

if you are willing to write a blank check to address every problem right away yes you might avoid such temporary issues and make the trains look cheap. But you will be paying thou the nose whether you like it or not.

What you describe is a issue of highly selective media cherry picking issues to push an agenda, while ignoring every other issue. The current issue of brittish poverty for example is NOT new. They are just pointing it out to push some agenda.

The issue of the sewage spill was probably also not new either as that happens often enough in countries all over the world including the US.

Railways have long been a bad business model almost everywhere. The fact that people would complain about being charged thou the nose to ride a trade is absurd. The engin and cars are huge costs as are the tracks, you need to consistently pack the train with lots of cars full of people to justify that cost so that it is minimumal among all the people.

The fact that the train could not do that, particularity if it has less dense urban routes is hardly shocking. Most of Europe forces every citizen to pay thou the nose in taxes for such trains, and thus hiding the costs. But you are paying that price regardless. In the U. S. we are just a little more honest about it. Which is the reason we don't have such trains in the US.

Conservatives were in charge for 14 years before this last election :) That's the thing it seems like it doesn't really matter who's in charge the governmental system just seems broken.

Brexit really screwed the UK economy, there's a good break down in yesterday's independent newspaper of the stats. People forget just how important a good relationship is and brexit stuck two fingers up to trading partners and that hit small businesses.

But it's being a long time coming, we've rely far too much on the finance sector for our wealth creation. We have little industry left and don't produce that much anymore. A tiny part of London creates most our wealth via the stock exchange and banking and that's not healthy.

I feel like these problems could be solved though but the government itself is screwed up so the problems don't seem to get fixed. I don't know it's complicated I feel like the more I try to understand and see things clearly it can become more difficult. I don't know I'm gonna sleep a bit have a good evening :)
