Thoughts on using emojis?

Question.

Personally I think they're really really bloody stupid and people should use words instead. It is a text message after all. Like I guess a smiley face is okay but basically all other ones are stupid and worthless. Thoughts?

Using ONLY emojis as a reply is not really a way to communicate, I agree. But emojis are not that useless. Unlike face to face interactions or phonecalls, if you are texting someone, oftentimes you cannot display your emotions and tone of voice so some messages can be misinterpreted. For example:

"That's stupid"
Vs.
"That's stupid -.-" (this one indicates a more playful tone)

There are many other examples but I just can't seem to think of them. But from personal experience, I have been accused of being unintentionally cold or angry because the texts I wrote did not really help show my playful tone without the emojis and thus caused some misinterpretations on the reciever's part.

Emojis are fine, as long as theyre not used in excess. They're great to help convey tone or express emotion when you don't have the words. They also can be a fun way to spice up a text, a status on social media, or to caption a picture. But personally I feel that one or two is enough, I really don't understand sending multiple emojis. I also don't understand the need for some of the emojis they make but, to each their own.

I generally avoid using emojis. I hate that people often think I'm being rude or passive-aggressive because I don't put an emoji after everything I say. However, some of them are great for conveying tone. That's otherwise hard to do with just words, at least with my limited vocabulary.

Not really. Its a smiley face, adds tone to the words. Emojis are just little pictures people use too much.

For example, if i want my text to be positive, i put this> ^-^
But i dont put it a thousand times like you can emojis. With smiley faces, one suffices.

I have a dry sense of humour which includes sounding like im upset when im anything but. Easy to tell in person, not so much in text. Smiley faces help me talk in text the way i do in perspn and not be misunderstood... As much anyway.

I think that they have a place. Sometimes Emoji and Emoticon can carry more meaning than words in a much simpler way. If the context of a message would not allow the other to see if one is using sarcasm, then a simple ";)" could solve the issue. Adding a ":)" to a message can show the tone behind it when words are ambiguous. A thumbs up as a response instead of "Yes, I have read this message and understand its content" is much more intuitive.

Now, I often see them being overused or misused even. While I think they have a use they definitely are no one size fits all and can cause more confusion than they may prevent.

Emojis are in general a great idea. Because when we spend so much time messaging and texting, it's easier for misunderstandings and mistaking people's tone/mode. So emojis are great for texting and showing how you feel.

But honestly, using emojis outside of texting/messaging on your phone is pretty f*cking stupid.

Well, yes we could... most of the time. But there are definitely many more occasions where texting and messaging is easier or the only solution. Such as, I'm not going to fly a 13 hour flight that cost 5 thousand dollars to just talk to family that is away or a friend overseas Face it, in the modern world, messaging and texting is so much easier and is so important.

Emojis are okay. They're pretty good at clearifying what tone you're going for... especially since my snarky way of writing sometimes comes across as hostile, it helps to have a smiley in there to snow I'm not angry or anything. ^_^

I use emojis sometimes, but only when I don't want to seem super-serious and I feel that it's awkward to use words.
But yeah, I prefer words.
