Egyptian Hieroglyphics were way, way more sophisticated than our modern emoji language, even though they used similarly simplistic-looking pictures and symbols, they had way more of them, and used them to craft sometimes quite complex ideas and concepts and communicate things that were abstract.
Emoji language has that a little bit, but it's nowhere near as sophisticated, it's just a little supplementary language to our modern techno-English.
English is breaking down and becoming more simplistic and less capable of expressing complex and subtle shades of meaning, so it makes sense for pictures to start taking the place of words more and more. Words are becoming mere symbols of their former meanings, so it makes sense for the more basic words to be replaced by symbols completely. Over time, more and more different concepts that once got different words will be replaced with ONE word that expresses a whole family of concepts at the same time, and therefore none of them completely, or meaningfully.
We're on the way towards changing the language so radically that our modern speech today will be incomprehensible to people just a few generations from now, the same way Shakespearian English is incomprehensible to most of us today.
Perhaps we are seeing what the Egyptians experienced with the decline of their empire, the rise of 'short-hand' versions, written in ink, on papyrus, rather than cut in stone. The conquest by the Greeks and later the Romans.
Languages are 'living' things and must change with the times. Ironically, Latin, a 'Dead' language is being discontinued at many schools, secular and non-secular. There was some resurgent interest, with the Harry Potter Movies, and the spells, in Latin, but like most 'fads' that seemed to have faded.
@JackSmy Latin will never catch on again, there's not enough people left on the planet who actually know how to speak it.
I understands you can see the similarities, but I think hieroglyphics and the Chinese language are more advanced, so you can't say it's exactly the same.
Emojis may show the thing it means. If you means noodle, you sends a picture of some noodles. In hieroglyphics it may be more metaphors in it where a symbol may have a different meaning than what it looks like. A bird can mean something else than just a bird and a drawing may also represent a sound depending on the context. Chinese and hieroglyphics also have a different grammar system I've heard.
Correct me if I remember it wrongly.
Please don’t tell me you are comparing hieroglyphics to emoji’s. One is a full on language. Emojis is just millennial fun
True story
They do remind me of the Aztec codex & Mayan Codex a little bit more than the Egyptian hieroglyphics 😂

Emoji's would be a pictogram sort of language while Hieroglyphs are not. That means that Emoji's tries to convey meaning through the physical representation of what you want to convey such as if you want to convey the meaning of the sun you draw a sun or use a sun emoji. Hieroglyphs might use certain pictures in their language but they contain a separate meaning from what they actually look like.
Pictogram languages are usually very basic such as cave paintings or early versions of languages. Another more modern application is warning signs.
Not at all. There were only a few with priveledges that could actually read hieroglyphs, such as scribes. Most didn't have the education to understand them. It was also a basically their alphabet and had a lot of different meanings whereas emojis are just symbols that stand for different things based on who interprets them.
No, not at all!! I think Emojis are a Chinese conspiracy to get Americans, and Western cultures comfortable with these, and then, over the next decades, they will MORPH, and become like the Chinese language symbols, and they are starting to teach us their language, as they are taking over, and in 50 years, we will all be speaking Chinese.
Not saying it is good, or bad, and not judging, just saying.
"Just because you are 'paranoid' doesn't mean that they aren't out to GET YOU!!"
Yes!
I'm telling myself this exact thing when I see them.
We have the option to be exact in our communication. To say whatever we want clearly.
No. Some retarded morons just put couple of pics and think everyone will get it.
Words? Do you know them?
I have one (more) rule for other people. If you cannot use words (correctly), then I'm not losing my time on you.
As and Egyptian , i wanna thank you for the question.. As i can honestly say , comparing them is insulting to the ancient Egyptian amazing language.. It is still your right to demonstrate what you think freely.. When you come to Egypt - if you will - You would see so many wonderful things that you wouldn't believe..
Definitely not. Hieroglyphics are way more complex and in ancient Egypt only few could read them. With Emojis a lot of people can read them and they are pretty straightforward 😂
No. Emojis are an attempt to add a pragmatic context to text-based telecommunications, whereas hieroglyphics provide semantic context. The fact that they both make use of glyphs doesn't make them equivalent.
Comparing cheap, silly emojis to the wonderfully done hieroglyphics is insulting.
Oops:)
Lol , i agree with you.. but still the girl can express herself
Absolutely not! Hieroglyphics is a combination of logographic, syllabic, and alphabetic elements
I have no idea what you are saying so I guess not.
I find too much use of them a bit cringy... so no I don't think its a modern version of hieroglyphics.
No, far from it. The Egyptians who used hieroglyphs were educated and well respected by their community. People who use emojis are barely literate and respected only by their followers.
Emojis are little more than punctuation or, at best, short hand. You cannot transmit complex thoughts by use of emojis.
Nope, hieroglyphics were advanced and complex unlike emoji
No.
The ancient equivalent to emojis would be the inept rejects whose skulls were thrown to the bottom of a pit.
I guess... half the time I can't read the darn message so it might as well be.
Emojis were invented in Japan, where letters are actual glyphs.
So those are the same as hieroglyphics, and emojis a deviation of them without phonemes.
I hope not. I prefer people to speak in fully formed and structured sentences. With words. In English. Or German. Really just any official language that is legitimately recognized. Like Klingon.
Not even close...
Comparing the two is laughable
Nope. The ancient symbols were often phonetic so more like an alphabet with elaborate drawing.
no they aren't
Hieroglyphs take a great deal of skill to carve, emojis are a much faster of way of communicating feelings.
Hieroglyphics has the visual symbols associated with sounds that combine together to be associated to ideas. Emojis are visual symbols that are associated to ideas so no
I can read neither but I believe that hieroglyphs are more complex than emoji language the emoji language is more like a pictograph though I don't know for certain on either of my points
Lol, yeah it sure seems like it. That and two letter abbreviations. What is society coming to?
I was making this very point to someone the other day. Our language has regressed.
No definitely not. Emojis are used to set the tone of a text, instead of being the actual text
If so, I support a catastrophic plague of a pandemic scale
no these are before the flood of Noah
these have a meaning emojis are a joke lol
I hadn't thought of it that way, but it totally is lol
Yes. It's a degradation of language.
lazy people jargon both
it could very well be
U better believe it
Ha! I think so🤔
I think so Walk like an Egyptian
You can't walk like an Egyptian :P
No..
I don't think so, ancent story telling
Yessssss 💙💜💚
Exactly..
In a way if someone retarded created it I guess
Yeah
I hope not
In a way
Kinda is. Lol
No it's a fad.
Can someone tell me wth the emoji sentence says?
No, lol.
Nope...
