Your favorite gaming era and favorite console?

Mine had to be the Nintendo 64 days, although I grew to LOVE the Xbox 360, as well. I've owned an NES, SNES, Genesis, N64, GameCube, PS2, 360, and every Nintendo handheld except the Switch. I hate the PS4/X-bone era, so I currently switched to PC.

I'm gonna have to say PS2. I owned a genesis and an N64.

But when I got the ps2 I played the hell out of that thing. There were so many awesome games and tons of lesser known titles that was amazing.

At the time Yakuza and Godhand were not as well known but they were really fun.

And the best part there were no stupid updates where you had to wait like an hour before you can play. You just insert the disc and start playing immediately.

N64 PS1, & Dreamcast were definitely the golden era. There was no Internet updates, so every game was released in its perfect form with no patches or DLC. There was no online multiplayer subscriptions and no freemium.
Pieces of crap like CyberPunk 2077 and Watch Dogs never existed in those days.

You don't remember those days very well because pieces of crap like Superman 64 did exist. Games also did have bugs and such back then too. They were just never patched out since those consoles couldn't connect to the internet, but bugs did exist in games back then as well.

@Gafgorkion Superman 64 was a rare site. Most games were well made and didn't have a single bug. Mario 64, Pilotwings, Quest, Forsaken, GoldenEye, all were perfect games with no DLC.

Mario 64, Pilotwings, Quest, Forsaken, and Goldeneye are only five games. Wikipedia says the N64 had a total of 393 games released. Out of those 393 games, I would be hard pressed to come up with even 25 of them that were truly great games.

I'm not saying that the N64 was a bad system by any means. I am simply refuting your statement that the games were all perfect with no bugs and bad games didn't exist. That simply was not true at all. It's simply not true with any console generation. Every generation has hundreds and hundreds of games, but only a small fraction of them are truly great games.

That's the danger of nostalgia. Nostalgia makes us remember the past as being better than it really was. We tend to forget the bad things and only remember the good. The N64, like any other console, had more bad games than good games. We just tend to forget the bad ones.

I think the bigger point was that, releasing a game with bugs and glitches in it was far more unacceptable and damaging to a company's reputation because there was no "eh, we'll patch it later" online connectivity there. In other words, game-makers actually had *standards* to live up to, making broken buggy games like Big Rigs a rare thing.

Furthermore, most of the bugs before the PS4/Xbox One era were unintentional things they missed in play-testing. Most buggy games back then were from crappy low-budget developers, where as today, we have AAA studios like Bethesda, 2K, EA, and CD Projekt Red that will *intentionally* put out buggy, broken games, expecting gamers to put up with it because not enough gamers ever get mad or file for class-action lawsuits in something that should rightfully be flat-out illegal. Only the gaming industry can get away with selling you something broken at full price and then go, "We'll fix it later. Maybe." And this is only a thing of this current PS4/Xbox 1 generation.

@John_Doesnt My answer wasn't angry nor butt hurt so I don't know how you got that impression. Cyberpunk isn't even my type of game, and I wasn't interested in it even before it was released as a buggy mess. My reply had nothing to do with that.

My reply was simply refuting your statement about the N64 being perfect. No console is ever perfect. Out of the 393 N64 games, there are probably only 50 actually worth playing. That is true with any console honestly. Even console has hundreds of games with only a small fraction of them being worth playing.

Don't get me wrong. I absolutely loved the N64/PS1 era. I am 41 years old, and that was my college years playing the N64 and PS1. Ocarina of Time, Mario 64, Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 1-3, Final Fantasy 7-9 are some of my favorite games of all time. I spent more time playing those games than I did going to class. lol

@mcheetah That is true that many developers nowadays release buggy games knowing that they can patch them later. I agree with that. There were however games by AAA developers even back before the internet that were buggy pieces of crap.

Remember Blasto? Most people have probably forgotten about that piece of crap. Blasto was a game developed by Sony and intended to become the Playstation's mascot similar to Mario and Sonic being the Nintendo and Sega mascots respectively. However, Blasto ended up being a very bad game, and Sony decided to not make Blasto their mascot, and they never made a sequel to it either because it was so bad.

I do think it is true that nostalgia tends to cloud our memories of the past. I doubt very many people remember Blasto and how Sony was touting it up to be such an amazing game.

I'd say PS2. At that time, we still had many, many great games, at least one a month, if not more.
And no internet on consoles.
Why is it important? Well I consider the connected consoles to be the downfall of video games. At the moment you had a connection, video games companies knew that:
- They didn't have to release a complete game, because they could patch it afterwards. Which today is a norm, with the day 1 patches.
- They also knew that they could make you pay for content, and DLCs arrived. What was supposed to be an addition to a complete game became cut content from the game, to be sold separately.
One example for me was the "Dynasty Warriors" series. Back in the day, if we wanted new costumes or weapons for our characters, we had to unlock it in the game, through hard challenges. Today, in the same series, you have to pay literally 690$ of DLC. Can you imagine?
- And of course, the multiplayer. On which VG companies focused because it was easier than make a good story and a great gameplay. Throw 15 retards on a map, with the only goal to kill each other, and that's it. Online multiplayer is a plague to VG.
- Let's also add their attempt to kill the second hand games by making you pay to play it. Glad this failed.
- Also, the all "locked to account and hard drive" saves, to stop people from lending games and sharing their saves. Before, we could take our game, our memory card, and go play at our friend's house. Now you can't anymore.
- And the worse, the most recent "game as service" trend, where they make you pay for shitty content on the long run, instead of making new good games.

Yeah, that's when I say video games were still on top, PS2. We had the graphics, the liberty, the complete games.

6th generation for me.

The PS2 is awesome but the only thing I didn't like about it was the bootup sound. Xbox is my most favorite console as it had an online service which wasn't popular yet that time (though online gaming was now popular), and it also had a built in memory, thus you didn't need to have a memory card. GameCube is a fun gaming console as you can play GBA games there and multiplayer games are cool in that console. DreamCast would have been a cool console if it didn't phase out. I don't know anything about the N-gage and the Tapwave Zodiac.

5th gen is all about PSone. N64 is also cool and I like it's controller. Saturn is great but too bad it didn't have much multiplayer games like the two. I've never played the 3DO before but I heart it was the most expensive console in this gen. Jaguar had a weird controller and having played it's games, I really didn't like the console. I find GBC games boring and I didn't know there was a Neo Geo Pocket.

7th gen is about portables for me because I'm addicted to playing the PSP and the DS. The Wii is also cool when it comes to their internet services. The 360 is a great console because of Kinect. And the PS3 for me was the ideal console to play even though it was the most expensive, the original model can play PSone & PS2 games.

4th gen is where the competition started. Consoles and portables started competing. SNES, Mega Drive, PC Engine, Neo Geo, Game Boy, Game Gear, Lynx and TurboExpress. I wasn't born on that era yet but I think those were the time when life was more simple.

I wasn't excited that much for the 8th gen but the Switch for me is awesome. The Wii U would have been too as well but it didn't attract 3rd party games. The PS4 is a a bit good, I appreciate them having the VR. I personally think that the Xbox 1 is just average.

I don't know if I'll buy a console for the 9th gen.

I'm also not a fan of the first three generations.

Loved the SNES/original Game Boy era. Was probably most active myself during the N64 era, which was amazing, partly thanks to Rare games.

I am belatedly discovering other gems I missed on various platforms. In retrospect, I weirdly wish I had bought a Sega Dreamcast.

I have a PS3, which I have played a couple of games on: Far Cry 4 and Skyrim. Good times.

My friend has a PS4, and I have played some Rocket League with him - also fun.

I think the new PS5 looks dumb AF, I honestly wouldn't want the monstrosity in my home.

PC still seems to be the most versatile platform. That being said, I love the ease of consoles.

I had a N64 in the year 2000, my friend had a Dreamcast, and my other friend, she had PlayStation 2. Having friends who had other consoles were the best way to go, unless you had rich parents willing to buy you whatever you wanted.

I loved most of the modern gaming era, except the PS4/Xbox One, because consoles became lame and redundant, at that point. By 2014-2015, it was just best to go with PC and "exclusive" games mostly became a thing of the past. I was going to get a Nintendo Switch back when everyone was calling it the NX in 2015-2016, but the hardware itself is complete crap (as is, the name), and only a few games on there are worth playing (Breath of the Wild, Mario Odyssey, Smash Ultimate, Mario Kart 8; only four games at best), and not enough to warrant purchasing right now, in my opinion, and I'm still also waiting for a Switch Pro.

Nobody can get a PS5, and Xbox Series X/S looks like more trash, just like the Xbox 1, so I agree with you that this generation is worth sitting out, as well. PC is best.

Well I'd have to say playstation 1 and 2 era because that was what got me into video games. I always liked games but that was when I started getting into them hardcore, predominantly through the JRPG's like the final fantasy and wild arms series. Though nintendo will always have a special place in my heart just because that was kind of the begining of video gaming (prior to that it was more a novelty) thanks to Castlevania, Mario, Megaman, and for me at least Blaster master (great game, weird, but great).

However if we are talking over all, I actually like this era's computer games because their is a lot of interesting things being done (not so much on console in my opinion. Consoles are bloated with too many loot box games and pretty graphics with no real substance (not all of them of course but a lot of them).

I grew up in my teenage and young adult years in the Xbox 360/ps3/Wii/Wii U era so I'd have to choose that. I was born in 1993 so I was too young to play the M rated games in the early 2000s and before. I was just about old enough by the mid-2000s and late 2000s to play them. I have played at least over 100 games on my Xbox 360. there's so many great games that I played on that. Its the console I played the most games on in my whole life so its definitely a console thats one of the best, probably even better than the PS2 in my opinion.

For me it is the home computers of the late 80's and the current XBox.

I'm a 70's child my 80's teenage years had home computers such as Dragon 32 and Commodore C64 as my parents thought computers would be a good future career (it was) so I didn't have any of the early consoles. I slowly progressed through various 'real' computers such as the Commodore Amiga and even got a Apple Mac before I moved out when I treated myself to an original PlayStation. Then the internet started to become popular and I moved back to PC's until I bought an XBox 360 and Nintendo Wii. I have since bought an XBox One which gets a lot of use (as still does the Wii) and I am planning to buy a new XBox Series X when my local stores get some stock.

I grew up playing the original Nintendo, but I really enjoyed the PlayStation 2 I bought many years later.
Also I got an old Sega Dreamcast with a bunch of games at a garage sale one time and it was actually pretty fun.
It had some cool snowboarding game.

I do admit to having fond memories of the gameboy and NDS I had. They can't compare to a PC, but it's partially because they weren't meant to. Consoles do what they need to do, which is play games and make them enjoyable. But I'm much fonder of PCs because for similar money they do much more, to the point where they can theoretically do near all what the consoles do and better because they are so much more open ended. (think PPSSPP vs a regular PSP)

It's tough because I simply can't give it to any era, we are always progressing. I enjoy old school games for sure, but it does not stop there! I love the new tomb raider games for the ps4 as much as I love the super mario games for the nes and pitfall on atari

I’m a casual gamer and haven’t had an Xbox for long (although did have a 360 years ago) and only play StarWars Battlefront 2 which I love however I also played some Lego games (including the classic Lego StarWars games) and old Halo games which were also great.

I'd have to say the 360/ps3 era. There was a lot more competition between developers, more originality and birth of good franchises. Plus this is when online competitive gaming really peaked and was actually fun before going downhill and devolving into esports garbage and cookie-cutter game design.

i loved mario kart on the nintendo 64 and i loved GTA on ps2. However nintendo DS had some of the most fun games back in junior high as well as the xbox kinect with all the dance games.

Early 2000s xbox original, that's has a lot of fond memories. Sarge's War, Star Wars Battlefront 1 & 2, Medal Of Honor, and of course the Bond Games. I enjoyed Game cube as well especially super Smash Sunshine and Mario Cart. These games were only enjoyable with family, by myself I get bored, but verses is always enjoyable.

But i guess my truly favourite has to be PS2 💪
Although i had every Playstation up to PS4, also had SNES, N64, Wii and Wii U, Sega Genesis, Saturn, and Xbox 360.
Never had the Dreamcast 😢 and i will never be able to forgive myself for that 😂
