I used to pirate software all the time as a teen. I even continued after I became a software developer, pirating software while trying to sell our own at the same time. I would download like a thousand songs from Napster back when it was popular.

I think I was more motivated by the inconvenience than anything else, and I didn't register the immorality of it. It felt like a "victimless" crime even though it wasn't.

What got me to stop was actually all these online stores like Steam and so forth. It became more convenient to just buy these things than to pirate them.

Also with music, it seems largely free now. If I have a craving to hear Laura Branigan, I just type it into Youtube and I get this for free:

I don't have to go to a record store and browse around and get disappointed because they don't have her album.

I pay as there is so much pirated software with built in access for miners etc.

Even with licensed software that is within its lifecycle, people really need to keep it up to date.
