I think not. "Traditional" car companies, I think, were just reluctant to start out on that path. But now that the continued existence of Tesla has shown them that electric vehicles are in fact a marketable idea, they are far more likely to take it a lot more seriously in the near future. So it's hard to say, as Tesla has been operating effectively without a competitor up until now. But once the engineering resources that have been doing this for several lifetimes really digs in, we'll know for sure.

Tesla may still come out on top, though. Electric motors aren't hard to understand but a head start is a head start all the same. I do think they are overeaching with grid storage, though. The whole benefit of lithium ion batteries is they are light weight. That means nothing if a battery is just going to sit there forever. Ambri, I think, has the better grid storage solution with their liquid metal batteries. If that ever catches on I suspect the lithium ion batteries will become cheaper.

I think that once the technology improves , Ford and GM will continue their domination of the mass production of electric vehicles. Tesla will be mainly a luxury brand.

In low speed tunnel systems and where cost inefficiency does not matter they are good enough.
Otherwise I wish ''Tesla'' all the worst which is possible.

As for electrics and batteries BMW were already making better stuff before Tesla was a thing.

Tesla cars have a reputation for flaring up like a match, so I wouldn't buy one of those.
